  2. What is a biography? What does biography mean? The prefix “bio” means life The stem “graphy” means “to write” Biography Life / write

  3. What am I going to do first? • Read a chapter book about a person from American history who lived before 1850. • Who are some of these people? • Let’s think together. • How can I even find out? • Where can I look? • Is there a list? • Could I ask anyone? • Let’s think together.

  4. Where can I look? • Social Studies book. (in desk / check index) • Timeline of American Events. (up on back wall) • Timeline of important people in American history. • Analyze the individual. Does he/she look like someone who lived long ago? When were they born? How are they dressed? (That’s a good clue!) • Read the summary of the book you select to be sure this person was part of our American history. • Check with Ms. Meschke to have your book OKed.

  6. All right, you have a biography book that has been checked by Ms. Meschke. Now what? Read the biography. While you are reading, keep a journal of 12 events in chronological order. (Chronological order? What does that mean? ) Create an Awesome Album with mementos on each page. Sentences will describe the event. This is the writing part. The beginning of November, you’ll get to present your awesome album to the class dressed as that individual. Do I really dress up? YEP!

  7. It is the same thing as putting events of a story in the correct sequence. First, second, next, then, finally. This is in Chronological Order because the events are placed from the first to the last in order.

  8. Benjamin Franklin

  9. Your goal is to find 12 SIGNIFICANT events in this person’s life. • Ideas for the Album • A real key • A quill pen that was used to sign a document or a paper that represents the Declaration of Independence. • A baby announcement • Make a ticket to board a ship to France. • Death certificate

  10. Your name:_______________ Jot down ideas in this open space that you might use for showing that event. Then you won’t forget them.

  11. Example of a timeline for Benjamin Franklin Significant Events in Ben’s life.

  12. Awesome Album Brag Book – Scrap Booking Significant Events Yes, you can use stickers or colorful stationary border pages to fancy up each page.

  13. Awesome Album • Cover – person’s name, birth and death date, picture of the person, and your name. (You may use a binder.) • 12 separate pages each describing an event in that person’s life are placed in chronological order and inside the cover. (You may have more than 12 events.) • Eachsignificant event is written in one or more complete sentences. • These sentences use power words and descriptive language so the fact can be visualized by the reader. • Grammar is important and will be graded. • Each of the 12 pages must have a memento attached to it. • Be creative. • Write neatly. (You can use the computer.)

  21. To sum it up. Read the biography book. While you are reading, keep a journal of 12 events in chronological order (Writing down the dates is a good way to do this). This will help you make your Awesome Album. Think of HOW you want to present each significant event. Create your Awesome Album. You can be making pages while you are reading. The pages must include at least one descriptive sentence about the event and a memento. You’ll be assigned a date to present your awesome album to the class. You’ll need to dress as that individual and bring a prop. The costume can be very simple – even made out of paper.

  22. Can I expect any help? You will be getting handouts to help you remember. We will have lessons so you can learn about family trees and chronological order. We will have discussions about the types of mementos and make a birth announcement. There will be examples in the room of exemplary projects from past students. Your parents will be able to download this from my BLOG – Projects – October Book Report. We’ll go to the library today or tomorrow.
