  1. Persuasive Essay/PresentationTopics

  2. Air Pollution Debate • Who/what is the biggest contributor? • What can we do to control it?

  3. BioFuel Biomass, a renewable energy source, is biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms, such as wood, waste, (hydrogen) gas, and alcohol fuels. Biomass is commonly plant matter grown to generate electricity or produce heat. Are Biofuels with the price?

  4. Coal Almost exclusively used to refer to carbon capture and sequestration technology (CCS), Clean coal is an umbrella term used primarily to describe technologies that may reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas that arise from the burning of coal for electrical power. Is it enough? Is coal still a viable energy source?

  5. Cloud Seeding • How does the affect the water cycle? • Is this a reasonable solution for water needs?

  6. Global Warming/Climate Change Debate • Fact or fiction? • Political, social or environmental issue?

  7. Hydro Power Hydropower, hydraulic power, or water power is power that is derived from the force or energy of moving water, which may be harnessed for useful purposes.

  8. Natural Gas, Marcellus Shale and Hydrofracking Natural gas is a gas consisting primarily of methane, typically with 0-20% higher hydrocarbons (primarily ethane). It is found associated with other hydrocarbon fuel, in coal beds, as methane clathrates, and is an important fuel source and a major feedstock for fertilizers. NIMBY?

  9. Hydrogen Power • Is the danger worth the reward?

  10. Energy Efficient light bulbs VS Energy efficiency may refer to: Efficient energy use, energy conversion efficiency (the ratio between the output and input of an energy conversion machine), and/or energy conservation (efforts made to reduce energy consumption)

  11. National Forest Logging Deforestation is the removal of a forest or stand of trees where the land is thereafter converted to a nonforest use. Examples of deforestation include conversion of forestland to agriculture or urban use.

  12. Metric vs. Standard • Should we adapt to the world, or should they adapt to us?

  13. Mining Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth, usually from an ore body, vein or (coal) seam.

  14. Nuclear Energy Nuclear power is produced by controlled (i.e., non-explosive) nuclear reactions. Commercial and utility plants currently use nuclear fission reactions to heat water to produce steam, which is then used to generate electricity.

  15. Oil Drilling – Off Shore Oil comes from the remains of tiny plants and animals (plankton) that died in ancient seas between 10 million and 600 million years ago. After the organisms died, they sank into the sand and mud at the bottom of the sea. What is the

  16. Organic Food Organic foods are made in a way that complies with organic standards set by national governments and international organizations. For the vast majority of human history, agriculture can be described as organic; only during the 20th century was a large supply of new synthetic chemicals introduced to the food supply.

  17. Peak-Oil theory • How imminent/accurate?

  18. Pesticides • Should we use them?

  19. Rain Forest Destruction • Use of rainforest land? Should we cut the rainforest for other uses?

  20. Sustainability/Carrying Capacity • Are we attempting to exceed our planet’s carrying capacity?

  21. Bottled Water • Are we bottled water dependent? • Is the use of bottled water necessary?

  22. Wetlands Regulation • Should the government spend money to preserve the wetlands?

  23. Whaling • Do the products, profit, and jobs justify the whaling industry?

  24. NASA Funding • Should NASA be budgeted for?

  25. Alcosan Debate
