  1. Walk-in • Water stored underground in aquifers is extremely important. We are using more groundwater than we put back. • What are some solutions society can use to help replenish groundwater?

  2. Building Empathy in the Worldwide Water Crisis Worldwide water crisis

  3. Building Empathy • When you feel empathy, you put yourself in another person’s position and try to imagine how they feel and why they act the way they do. • As you view these photos, remember not to judge, but to try to understand what these people are going through.

  10. Consider… • 1. Why do people live this way? • 2. Why doesn’t it bother the people in the pictures to drink dirty water? • 3. What hard conditions do you see people in the pictures having to deal with? • 4. Would you think twice the next time you pour a pitcher of water down the drain? Why or why not? • 5. Are there changes we should be making in the United States so we preserve our water?

  11. Water Facts • 97% of water is saltwater, so it can’t be used. • Of the 3% that is freshwater, 2% of it is frozen in polar ice caps and glaciers. • This leaves only 1% of freshwater available, much of it underground in aquifers.

  12. Conserving Our Freshwater • Avoid putting trash, sewage, and chemicals into rivers and lakes. • Avoid letting chemicals soak into the ground (where it mixes with groundwater and aquifers). • Be careful when digging for oil and minerals so we don’t pollute aquifers. • Making sure we return a part of the water we use to the groundwater. • Avoid pumping water out of aquifers too fast.

  13. In Developing Countries … • Help clean the water of germs so diseases can be reduced. • Help build water treatment plants, so raw sewage and other polluted waters are not put directly back into freshwater sources (like lakes and rivers). • Build wells and water storage areas so people don’t have to walk so far for water every day. • Boil water to kill germs in it. • Educate people on safe ways to get and store water.
