  2. What Do You Think? • What are some current practices of our culture that might challenge people who follow God? • Today we look at four young Hebrew men who faced this kind of challenge.

  3. Listen for how Nebuchadnezzar chose people for training in Babylon. Daniel 1:3-5 (NIV) Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring in some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility-- [4] young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king's palace …

  4. Listen for how Nebuchadnezzar chose people for training in Babylon. Daniel 1:3-5 (NIV) … He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians. [5] The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king's table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king's service.

  5. Expectation of Cultural Assimilation • What were qualifications for choosing young men for future administrative positions? • What were ways in which the king used to “lull” his Hebrew captives into blending with his culture? • What are ways in which our culture lulls us into blending with our culture?

  6. Expectation of Cultural Assimilation • How do we counter these cultural influences in a Christian home? • Consider Deut. 6:6-7 (NIV) These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. [7] Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

  7. Expectation of Cultural Assimilation • We are going to see in the next passage that Daniel did not resist training in Babylonian language and philosophy. Why do you think this was the case? • What do you think should be the attitude of believers about the beliefs and customs of other religious groups?

  9. Listen for the risk Daniel took in making his decision. Daniel 1:8-15 (NIV) But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. [9] Now God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel, [10] but the official told Daniel, "I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you." …

  10. Listen for the risk Daniel took in making his decision. Daniel 1:8-15 (NIV) … [11] Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, [12] "Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. [13] Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see." [14] So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days. [15] At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.

  11. Drawing the Line • Why was the official over Daniel reluctant to let him change his diet? • How do you see that Daniel demonstrated both flexibility and strength in this situation? • What risks do we run if we “draw the line” over a cultural issue we think is wrong for us to do?

  12. Drawing the Line • In what kinds of situations might you have to draw the line to avoid adopting habits ofthe prevailing culture … • At work? • In your neighborhood? • In a social club?

  13. Listen for how well the four young Hebrews measured up when their training ended. Daniel 1:17-21 (NIV) To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. [18] At the end of the time set by the king to bring them in, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar. [19] The king talked with them, and he

  14. Listen for how well the four young Hebrews measured up when their training ended. Daniel 1:17-21 … found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king's service. [20] In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom. [21] And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.

  15. Rendering Service to Society • What skills did God give them? Note that they used their God given skills for the foreign king and in the midst of a pagan culture … without compromising their first allegiance to God. • Why do you think Daniel’s tenure in the king’s court was so long?

  16. Rendering Service to Society • What are some ways in which God equips you (as a believer) to make a positive contribution to our culture ? We can and should do this without compromising our faith! • Why should we serve a society that is largely at odds with Christian beliefs and values?

  17. Conclusion / Application • God places you in situations where you must engage the culture you live in • When you see these differences, there will be some issues where you must separate yourself from the culture … “draw the line” or “take a stand” • God is the ultimate source of knowledge and wisdom
