The GRPI Diagnostic Model (Fry, Rubin, & Plovnick, 1981) My background in Organization Development • Goals • Roles • Procedures • Interpersonal Issues Lessons: 1) There is a difference between symptoms and causes. 2) There is a hierarchic order to these issues that can be useful when diagnosing.

  5. The Goal: Several Health Science professors and administrators at CSS came together with a vision to affect healthcare through Consulting Research and Healthcare Policy How did we get to innovation with iCare?

Procedural & Interpersonal Elements of Innovation • AEHR was improved upon by adding more disciplines besides HIM. • The Center began to sell AEHR subscriptions as a value-added reseller for the Cerner Corporation. • The AEHR was new to the market, and the strategy of being the first to offer the product worked…for awhile. • The academic EHR market opened, and other products began to challenge our innovation. • Differences in opinions occurred, and collaboration began to break down.

Back to Goal Alignment (What is our purpose?) • Academic EHR needs to meet the changing needs of practice and students. • Inter-professional practice requires inter-professional curriculum • Data mining – evidence based practice • Report writing • Web applications for online coursework • Meaningful Use • Privacy and Security • Informed customers

  9. Partner Goal Alignment • To meet our goals, we needed a partner who had similar goals, and: • Was agile; • Was flexible; • Desired to build a better product; and • Had a willingness to combine the latest software and education expertise to improve healthcare.

Goals have been aligned and roles established, but where are we today? • iCare and CHI – creating an EHR that allows for practice in all health science disciplines; • Specific focus on HIM functionality and data mining; • Mark is heading up sales, and we are beginning to realize our innovation goals.

Lessons Learned • Partnerships with diverse expertise require exceptional communication (We each have our own jargon.). • Innovation requires periodic evaluation, and using the GRPI model can assist in that process. • Goals: Are you staying on course with your purpose? • Roles: Do you have the right people and are they clear about their roles in the partnership? • If the goals and roles are clear, developing procedures will be much easier; and then • Interpersonal problems disappear or are minimized.
