  8. El Subjuntivo You have seen so far that the subjunctive is used to describe the following: • Things that may or may not happen (ex- I want you to do your homework.) • Things that deal with emotions (ex- Your parents are happy that you won your softball game.) • Things that are ambiguous (ex- I don’t think my boyfriend is going to the party)

  9. El Subjuntivo There are phrases and words of volition that help remind us when we need to use the subjunctive tense. WEIRDO Wedding is a mnemonic device that will help you remember when to use the subjunctive and which verbs are verbs of volition. From now on we are going to look at the subjunctive tense as a wedding.

  10. WEIRDO WEDDING- When to use the Subjunctive Tense In order to use the subjunctive tense we must have a WEIRDO Wedding! What makes a WEIRDO wedding? • A bride and groom • A wedding ring • A proposal *All three must be present to have a wedding/Subjunctive Tense*

  11. WEIRDO Wedding • Bride and Groom The bride and groom in the wedding represent the change in subject in the subjunctive sentence. You must have 2 people to get married…and you must have 2 different subjects to use the subjunctive. If there is only one subject in the sentence (ex-yo) then there can not be a weirdo wedding! *Phrases of volition may substitute for one of the subjects*

  12. WEIRDO Wedding • Wedding Ring The wedding ring in subjunctive sentences is represented by the word “que”. Without “que” as our wedding ring there can not be a wedding/subjunctive sentence! (In some cases “que” is not used-but MOST of the time we will need “que” to have a wedding)

  13. WEIRDO Wedding • The Proposal In order to get married someone has to propose to you…. The proposal must be one of the verbs or phrases of volition. This is where the WEIRDO comes into play. Each letter in WEIRDO represents verbs of volition.

  15. WEIRDO Proposal- Verbs of Volition Wish: Desear, Querer Emotion: Estoy contenta, Tener miedo de, temer, alegrarse de, Soprender, gustar, sentir, Influence: Preferir, esperar, aconsejar Request: rogar, sugerir, pedir Doubt: Dudar, No creer, No estar seguro, No es cierto Order: Mandar, exigir

Es imposibleque tú hagas la tarea. 2. Es dudosoque mi madre cocine la cena. 3. Es buenoque mi hermano venga a mi casa durante las vacaciones.
