VANIER CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPwww.vanier.gc.ca/en/home-accueil.html • Program purpose: strengthen Canada’s ability “to attract and retain world class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning.” • Value: • $50,000 per year, for up to 3 years (non-renewable) • Scope: • Up to 166 awards per year, through Tri-Council Agencies • SSHRC, NSERC, CIHR • Selecting the appropriate Tri-Council Agency: www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/22630.html#1-A

ELIGIBILITY To Apply: • First doctoral degree • Completed less than 20 months of doctoral studies (as of May 1st, 2020) • First class average (MUN = 3.5 minimum) • Canadian citizens/permanent residents, &international students • Have not received a previous, doctoral-level award from NSERC, SSHRC, or CIHR To hold a Vanier: • Registered full-time • Remain enrolled and demonstrate satisfactory progress • Cannot hold, or have held, doctoral funding from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC to pursue a doctoral degree

VANIER AWARD CRITERIA Research Potential Awards & scholarships(included on Canadian Common CV) Academic training & relevant work experience Research proposal (feasibility, merit & significance) Contributions to research Critical thinking, originality, creativity Mobility (applicants are strongly encouraged to apply beyond universities previously attended)

  5. VANIER AWARDS CRITERIA Academic Excellence First Class standing (transcripts) • Academic scholarships, awards, prizes, and distinctions • Previous study (academic background, duration & special circumstances)

Tips from Vanier about Leadership • Outline not just your accomplishments for the committee, but how those accomplishments required you to leverage your leadership skills to achieve your goals. • Outline how you have gone above and beyond the expected norms in those areas in order to overcome obstacles, foster others, spearhead change, or otherwise demonstrate leadership. • Craft a compelling narrative that tells your story of how you have had an impact

How you have created opportunities for yourself and others, • How you have overcome obstacles to your vision, and • How your PhD research, knowledge dissemination and mentorship activities will help accomplish new goals • How have you lead others, and how have you leveraged that skill? • What led you to doctoral research? How have your life experiences and personal circumstances (which may include administrative responsibilities, maternity/parental leave, childrearing, illness, cultural or community responsibilities, socio-economic context, trauma and loss, or health-related family responsibilities) shaped your academic, research, and leadership choices, challenges, and successes? • How has your life driven you to share and disseminate your research?

CANADIAN COMMON CV For the section "Contributions" the limit of entries for each sub-section are as follows: • Publications: 20 • Artistic Contribution: 10 • Presentations: 10 • Interviews and Media Relations: 10 • Intellectual Property: 5 The following sections have a limit of 5 entries per sub-section: • Activities • Memberships There are no limits for other sections of the CCV.

LETTERS OF REFERENCE4 Required Two Academic References • if you are in program, one must be from your supervisor • if you are entering your program it’s ok to not have PhD supervisor • referees must know you well, be able to comment on the quality of your work (academic excellence, research potential, leadership) and support their assertions with facts or examples • (ResearchNet does not guarantee referee access to application; you cannot submit your application until these letters have been completed) Two Leadership Reference Letters • written by someone who knows you in a non-academic capacity; • must be more than a list of duties; must speak to leadership potential AND your research project • this letter must be given to the applicant for uploading as a PDF to ResearchNet and must be uploaded one letter at a time

  13. Narrative Sections (MOST important) The Title of Research Proposal is used by the Vanier CGS program to identify your research project. (maximum of 640 characters) The Lay Title is used to inform the public and Parliament about the valuable research supported through public funds. Provide a title that is accessible to a lay audience. (maximum of 200 characters) The Lay Abstract will be used for promotional purposes outside the research community to inform the public and Parliament about the valuable research supported through public funds. Provide a summary of your research proposal written in clear, plain language. It should be written in non-technical terms that can be clearly understood by reviewers/readers outside of academia. The selection committee will use this section to help evaluate your communication skills, which can contribute both to your Leadership score and your Research Potential. Using simple terms, briefly describe the nature of the work to be done. Indicate why and to whom the research is important, any anticipated outcomes, and how the research will contribute to your field (maximum of 2000 characters).

Narrative Sections (MOST important) Lay Abstract, Research Description, Leadership Statement • No typos • No grammatical errors • Must be clear, direct, engaging • If your research makes a clear contribution to Canada, highlight that • If your research involves or impacts Indigenous communities, you must include the following text, in bold, at the beginning of the abstract: “This research involves Indigenous Peoples”.

  16. TIMELINE/DEADLINES • September 30, 2019 • Completed applications due at SGS (including all official transcripts) • November 6, 2019 • Deadline for institutions to submit applications • Early April, 2020 • Results released
