  2. On Christmas Day 2015, the Utah Department of Transportation dispatched around 500 snowplows to clear 6,000 miles of highways and interstates. However, many people still resort to do-it-yourself snow shoveling despite the risk of injuries. 2006 Study In 2006, a 17-year study published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine showed the common injuries related to snow shoveling. The researchers recorded snow shoveling - related injuries and emergencies in the country from 1990 to 2006. The study found the following injuries: Muscle, tendon, ligament, and other soft tissue injuries; Head and lower back injuries; Bone fracture in arms and hands; And heart-related illnesses among adults over 55. Adult men are the usual sufferers of snow shoveling injuries, while children under age 19 experienced more than 700 injuries. Most of the snow shoveling-related injuries to children are due to horseplay or other improper uses of snow shovels.

  3. 2014 Study In 2014, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed that more than 200,000 people suffered injuries while removing snow manually. Moreover, more than 25,000 people suffered from snow blower-related injuries. The Commission found that the common injuries related to DIY snow removal include muscle sprains and strains, specifically in the back and shoulders. The commission also found records of lacerations and finger amputations. 2015 News A Washington Post news in 2015 reminded people about the risk of orthopedic injuries and heart attacks during major snowstorms. The news stated that most of these injuries occur during manual removal of snow. Because of these risks, doctors recommend professional snow removal. However, if manual snow shoveling is necessary, doctors suggest that people warm up their muscles first before doing so because it is a vigorous activity. They also advise that residents take numerous breaks and avoid dehydration by drinking plenty of fluids. Doctors further recommend that people use appropriate equipment, such as a shovel that is suitable for their strength and height. Moreover, doctors suggest to observe proper lifting and other safe techniques, such as refraining from throwing the snow to the side or over your shoulder to avoid stress on the back.
