  3. Purpose of Evaluation • Ensures expectations and standards are met • Provides meaningful feedback • Develops leadership skills • In both evaluator & one evaluated • Helps prevent errors from being repeated

  4. Note Taking • Reason for taking notes • Productive note taking (focuses on relevance) • Continual note taking for best feedback • Take notes on positive and negative aspects

  5. Ways to Evaluate & Give Feedback • Formal • Evaluation forms(CAPF 50) • Formal reviews/counseling session • After Action reports • Informal • On the spot, etc.

  6. Cadet Leadership Feedback • New CAPF 50 • Works hand-in-hand with Leadership Expectations chart • Forms adapted for specific phases (I-IV) • Focuses on specific areas for improvement • Outlines where cadets are excelling

  8. Cadet Progression Evaluation • Outdated CAPF 50 • Based on requirements of cadet’s current phase/activity • One form for all phases/activities • Evaluates three main areas: • Military characteristics • Leadership • Personal traits

Cadet Leadership Feedback • Categories: • Military Characteristics • Appearance, bearing • Leadership • Attitude, interpersonal skills, sense of responsibility • Personal Traits • Integrity, enthusiasm, self-confidence, initiative • Evaluating standards: • Outstanding, excellent, satisfacotry, marginal, unsatisfactory

  10. Cadet Leadership Feedback • Categories: • Additional positive feedback • Areas that may require improvement • List: • Positions • CAP activities

After Action Reports • Completed after an activity/event • Provides feedback on the overall activity • Outlines issues encountered at the activity • Provides recommendations to avoid same issues in the future • Allows leadership to see issues that may not have been noticed at higher levels • Prompt feedback and details essential

  12. Writing an After Action Report • No standardized format • Include: • Introduction & name of activity • Statement of each issue individually • Situation summary for each issue • Proposed recommendation • Conclusion • Address each issue individually • Provide positive and negative feedback

  14. Tips • Take more notes than you think you’ll need • Provide specific examples of qualities, attitudes noticed, etc. • Have a positive and optimistic attitude • Remember that it is a learning experience for your cadets as well as for you
