The Elizabethan Theatre • Elizabethan - why that name? Because it is related to the times in which it took place. • That is, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I in England. • In the 1400s... when people wore ruffles around their necks! • During that time, the architecture of a theatre was different from theatres today. • There were no seats, part of the roof was open to the sky, and the stage was lit by oil lamps.
Small facts of the Elizabethan theatre • The fact that women were banned from participating in theatre because it was dishonest • Pricing of seats - it was significantly less expensive to stand than to sit. • It was written often to please Royalty - why many of Shakespeare's plays were comedies
What can women do in the Elizabethan theatre? • Women did NOT work in the Theater whatsoever during Elizabethan times. • Women were lucky to even be ALLOWED in to SEE a play. • If there was a role of a women, it was played by a young male. • They used young males because there voice have not deepened yet. • Which made it pull of the character of a women actor
Props & character change • Sets were more imagined than actually there. • Props were minimal. • Sometimes one character would simply change his hat to become a different character. • Plays were NOT these huge dramatic showy productions. • They were all about dialog and story.
Effects • Special effects were used to draw the attention of the audience. • The biggest effect was a bloody handkerchief • Used to pretend it was a wound or injury. • Titus Andronicus was one of the most violent plays, about revenge, brutality, murders, rape, and threats of human sacrifice • Animal intestines, tongues and bones were used to enhance the effects.

Actually! There is four genres! Researchers today usually classify some of Shakespeare's plays as romances, adding a fourth genre to the mix
Activity!! • Pair yourselves into groups of 5-6 max. • You're going to improva genre from the four(Comedies,Histories,Tragedies,Romance) that has been said earlier in the PowerPoint. • Elizabethan Theatre was quite rowdy, so use humor and especially insults and try and attempt the Elizabethan English.
