  1. An Introduction to Alice By Chris Brown under the direction of Professor Susan Rodger Duke University, March 2013

  2. In this world, we will… • Learn how to add and position 3D objects in an Alice world. We will choose the Water template, and then add an island from the Environments folder, a rowboat from the Vehicles folder, a conch shell from the Ocean folder, and a character that we create using the He/She-Builder in the People folder in the Object Gallery.

  3. In this world, we will…(continued) • Explore the built-in methods of objects. A method is a set of instructions that we want an object to complete, and Alice objects already come with many methods automatically. Some examples include moving, turning, rolling, and resizing. • Learn how to create new methods in order to teach our characters a new action. This is for when you want an object to do something that it doesn’t already know how to do in Alice. In this case, you will teach your person how to do a backflip!

  4. In this world, we will…(continued) • Understand and learn how to create events. An event is how we can interact with our Alice world and in this example we will create events to make the character do a backflip when we press a button and drive the boat around using the arrow keys. • Utilize the vehicle property. When we want the person to move with the boat when it moves, we will have to change what is called the “vehicle” property of the person to the boat. This can be found under an object’s “properties” tab.

  5. d Congratulations! You have just completed your first Alice world. There are many more things that you can do with Alice, so keep exploring it! Check out the Duke Adventures in Alice Programming site for more tutorials and activities to try. http://www.cs.duke.edu/csed/alice/aliceInSchools/ - Make sure to click on the Free Tutorials link to find out materials and try to build more worlds. The Astronaut and Humvee on the Moon short tutorial is very similar to this one and provides an overview of Alice concepts.
