  10. Q10 - Events 80 70 Events are important, but we also have to recognize that events are very time consuming for staff and may need to be prioritised in terms of what CS can manage, in addition to knowing what the Southland cycling community needs. 60 50 40 30 20 10 0 Road racing Track racing Large events Tour of Sthld Junior Tour of Sthld International Events Corporate Pursuit Most Important Moderately Important Least Important

  11. Q11 – Other Events? Are there any other events we are missing? • Social and fun, relaxed events (not necessarily races) • Mass participation events/fondos, to attract new people and for those who don’t want to race but just want to ride their bike • Bunch riding/charity bunch rides • Learn to ride in schools • Interclub racing • Masters racing • Off-road cycling (randonneur, gravel and cyclocross) • Local annual event to attract riders to Southland • Management of sponsors of events/cycling • Time trials – track and road, very few opportunities at present

  12. Q12– Programmes and Development 80 CS hosts a variety of programmes and development opportunities for both the novice rider to the high- performance athlete. 70 60 50 Resources often decide what we as an organization need to prioritise in order to meet the needs of our members. Rate the importance of the following: 40 30 20 10 0 Coaching Cyclofit Track Squads & Programmes Public Track Sessions Bike Ready/Road Safety in Schools Social Recreational Riding Most Important Moderately Important Least Important

  13. Q13– What Programmes and Development are we Missing? • Programme/coaching for beginners of all ages and recreational riders Technical/volunteer training and support - ensure volunteers understand their roles and what they are accountable for • • Programme for novice road riders, need road squads Opportunities for U19/elites who are not part of the hub to continue to grow and develop their skills and keep racing at high level • • Track riding seems stronger than road riding • School holiday programmes/camps Opportunities for non-squad/social riders to ride on the track • • School road racing • More fun and social events Accommodate club league type track cyclists who want to race regularly in a long-term way • • More support for coaches, lift quality of coaching, more experienced coaches “Ask the coach” type forum or sessions for people who are not high-performers but want to improve – tips and advice • • Don’t forget ‘Joe Average’ • Parent experience could be enhanced via mentoring system

  14. Q14– Office Functions & Advocacy 60 CS is fortunate to have paid staff to support membership and advocate for cycling in Southland. 50 40 However, is advocacy one of our key functions? (as opposed to other functions previously listed?) Rate the importance of the following: 30 20 10 0 Advocacy for cycling in Sthld Annual membership Club meetings Velodrome bookings & mgmt Collaboration with other sports Most Important Moderately Important Least Important

  15. Q15 – General Comments on Future Direction of Cycling Sthld • Address situation for those who don’t want to race – what is benefit of membership? • Build ‘one club’ culture, less of separation between juniors and seniors, ensure everyone is welcome, minimise petty politics • Use the volunteers more and not leave everything to the office staff • Ensure volunteers understand what their job descriptions are so we don’t have gaps or confusion on who is responsible for what, make sure boundaries are known • Key role of the office is to support the volunteers so that cycling can happen seamlessly • Growth and membership important to keep club sustainable, elite performance model has small place • More information for parents – provide more webpage information for those who have no knowledge of the sport, specifically development pathways • More of a co-ordinated coaching approach between squads on track • Ensure scheduling and co-ordination between track and road so there are no conflicts for riders who do both, improve calendar of events, define road and track seasons, we have a fragmented calendar • Improve communication and feedback, holding regular meetings may alleviate the back stabbing that goes on from certain members

  16. Q15 – General Comments on Future Direction of Cycling Sthld Keep it fun • Keep club racing going • Any events that incur massive losses financially need to be removed as it is financial sustainability that will see the club survive and growth begins • Concern about ongoing negative culture that has been created by a number of members through their actions on social media. The ongoing message messaging by these individuals around inclusivity and respect and yet their actions are the complete opposite • Webpage could be improved, it us difficult to navigate and isn’t very intuitive • Rider safety and bunch skills on the road is needed • All levels and commitment levels should be supported • Need to use our staff to re-unify events with other regions and club road and track. Especially lower to mid South Island provinces and clubs • Work with other clubs more, interclub events/racing •
