  1. The Pupil’s Guide to National 5 Reading

  2. Some information about your Reading exam and tips on how to improve your Reading skills…

  3. Timing • There are 3 texts, each with questions worth 10 points. • Make sure you spend no longer than 20 minutes on each text. • It’s important you get through as many questions as possible – don’t spend 40 minutes on 1 text and have no time for the last, for example.

  4. First Impressions • What do the layout of the text and any pictures suggest about the content of the text? • Read the rubric – the sentence in English before the text that explains what it’s about • This will help you with the gistof the text (very important) but that’s all

  5. The First Reading • Read the whole text all the way through first • This is when you’ll get a first understanding • It might help you think about what questions might come up • It will definitely give you a better idea of what words to look up

  6. Beacon Sentences • These are sentences in the text that point to the answer • Use the questions to help you find the part of the text with the answer • For example: if the question is how much does the hairdresser charge?Look for the word Friseur in the text • This helps to home in on the answer • Use highlighters to help

  7. Put the Dictionary Down! • THINK before you look up a word in the dictionary • You could spend the whole time sitting looking up words and not get through the questions • What do you really need to look up? Identify key or important words

  8. Identifying words that you should look up… Words that appear in the text frequently Words that appear in the title Words that are in a part of the text where an answer may be found NOT words that you already know like der, ich, und OR words you can guess

  9. Enough detail? • Very often, candidates miss points because they have not ‘fully’ answered the question • Identify the answer, read to the end of the sentence, and translate into English • Check for qualifiers (sehr, fast, ungefähr, etc) • If it gives a piece of info then ‘und’ or ‘dann’ – this probably counts as one point’s worth of information!

  10. Every Point Counts • One point can be the difference between the grade you want and one you don’t. Make sure you maximise your score by: • Checking you’ve answered the question • Ensuring your answer is in English and it makes sense • Not leaving any questions out

  11. Check your answers • Just in case you didn’t get it the first time… CHECK YOUR ANSWERS!!! • You’d be surprised how many points people can pick up this way • You may have missed out a crucial word in your answer, answered in the wrong language or got the question mixed up • SO CHECK!

  12. Exam Nerves • Your nerves will settle once you’ve started • Spotted an easy question in the paper? Why not start with that one? • Don’t be put off by words you don’t know. You don’t need to know every word. • The other pupils in the hall and all over Scotland are in the same boat as you • Don’t talk about the exam just before or after- it’ll only make you feel worse

  13. Top Tips • Get the timing right • Answer the question you are asked • Don’t leave any questions blank • Don’t waste time looking up loads of words in the dictionary – be selective • Be accurate with your answers • Check your answers

  14. And finally… Be aware of the power of positive thinking. Give it your best. GOOD LUCK
