Elemental Names. K , P, Au ?????? HUH?????. Deciding On a Name. The Swedish chemist Berzelius developed the system we use today. The right to name a newly discovered element is given to the discoverer. There are three rules for determining the symbol used to represent the element.

  2. Deciding On a Name • The Swedish chemist Berzelius developed the system we use today. • The right to name a newly discovered element is given to the discoverer. • There are three rules for determining the symbol used to represent the element.

  3. Naming an Element • Rule 1: Use the first letter of the element. • Eg. O, N, F, B • Rule 2. Use the first letter and the second letter • Eg. Al, Be, Ca • Rule 3 Use the first letter and another letter from the name. • Eg Mg , Cl , Zn

  4. Determining Symbols for the Elements • Sometimes symbols are determined by the Latin or German names of the element. • Eg. Ph , Au , Ag , Cu , or W , K • Always – the first letter is upper case and the second is lower case. • Co is ________________ • CO is _______________

  5. Symbols Continued … • Many of the newer elements are named after people, countries , place of discovery planets or girl friends of the scientists. • Ok – maybe not girlfriends…but why not?

Understanding Formulas For Compounds • When atoms combine they form molecules. • Molecules are particles that contain a relatively small number of atoms with definite bonds between the atoms. • Not all compounds are made of molecules. • The formula is a simple whole number ratio of each element in the compound.

Understanding Formulas For Compounds • Let’s look at water. • The molecular structure of water is H2O • This tells us that there are two hydrogen atoms and one Oxygen atom in each water molecule. • In Salt, (crystal not molecule) the formula is NaCl • One sodium atom for every chlorine atom. • There may be millions of atoms on the salt structure but the ration is always 1:1
