Child Health Services Provide a free Health service to : Families and children within the community aged 0-8 years • Enhancing parenting skills • Encouraging healthy family relationships Staff consist of: • Child health nurse • Early intervention specialists • Occupational therapist • Speech pathologists • Physiotherapists and Dietitians (MEND)
Caloundra Child Health Team • 5x Child Health Nurses – outreach programs (3.5 FTE) • 1x Speech Pathologist (0.4FTE) • 1x Early Intervention Parenting Specialist(1 FTE) • Other district Services – Pondering Poo’s and MEND Children are seen by referral from parents, family members, GP, or other specialists
1. Child Health Nurses • Preparation for Parenthood information sessions • Neonatal screening (Heel Prick) • Feeding issues (Breast feeding) • Baby’s first visit • Hearing screens • Parent information groups for young babies • Information groups for parents of babies, 6 months and 12-15 months on development, nutrition and behaviour • Parenting programs • Father’s groups
2. Early Intervention Parenting Specialist The Social Worker looks at: • A child’s attachment and bonding to the parents • behaviour management • parenting skills • Provides counselling to the parent and child • Offers circle of security through individual sessions with parent
3. Speech Pathologist Speech Pathologist looks at your child’s: - communication skills - language acquisition, - expressive language - feeding issues - Offering individual assessments and group sessions
District Services Occupational Therapist (0.2) offering: • assessment and management of constipation for children over 2yr • nocturnal enuresis or night time bed wetting >7 yrs Information groups about toileting for parents Dietician and Physiotherapist MEND Program: • Child weight management program for 7-13yr olds • Looking at mind, nutrition and exercise

How an OT could work along side the Child Health Nurses? • Educational group demonstrating activities to develop age appropriate milestones • Educational group with mother’s and babies about the importance of establishing a routine and forming a bond with baby • Education on effective breast feeding routines • Hearing Impairment referrals – providing strategies for communication
How an OT could work along side a Speech Pathologist? • Educational group demonstrating ways to develop fine motor and gross motor skills • Educational group encouraging play based activities to develop communication • SOS Feeding program
How an OT could work along side The Early Intervention Parenting Specialist? • Provide education about forming a secure attachment based on the circle of security • Provide an OT perspective on Behaviour Management E.g. Sensory processing therapy
Other ways an OT could contribute within the Child Health Team • Taking on Adult referrals for school aged Children not covered by other services • Providing assistance with the Pondering Poo’s program • Fine Motor and Gross Motor assessments • Assess play based skills • Assess sensory processing skills • Assess cognitive functioning
