  2. Materials • One of the six mandatory items for Level 1 • Represents up to 24 credits (7.2%) in Code • All at dwelling level • Three sub sections • Environmental impact of materials • Responsible sourcing – basic materials • Responsible sourcing – finished products

  3. Environmental impact of materials • 15 credits available • Based on Green Guide scoring • Need to get minimum criteria for Level 1 • Beyond that gives extra credits

  4. Minimum standard • Where at least three of the following five key elements achieve a relevant Green Guide rating from the 2007 version of The Green Guide of A+ to D: • Roof • External Walls • Internal Walls (including separating walls) • Upper and Ground Floors (including separating floors) • Windows

  5. Higher standards • Further credits are awarded based on the ratings for the five key elements as given in the 2007 version of the Green Guide. A+ Rating 3 A Rating 2 B Rating 1 C Rating 0.5 D Rating 0.25 E Rating 0

  6. Responsible sourcing • Now covers all materials not just timber • Different documentation and evidence required for various materials • Should be equivalent challenge but still some debate

  7. Basic materials • Credits (up to a maximum of 6) can be awarded where 80% of the assessed materials in the following Building Elements are responsibly sourced: • Frame • Ground floor • Upper floors (including separating floors) • Roof • External walls • Internal walls (including separating walls) • Foundation/substructure • Staircase • 100% of timber in elements must be legally sourced

  8. What materials are considered • Only the following materials are assessed in the calculation of points • Brick (including clay tiles) • Composites • Concrete (including blocks, tiles etc.) • Glass • Plastics • Metals (steel, aluminium etc.) • Stone • Timber • Plasterboard

Finished products • Credits (up to a maximum of 3) can be awardedwhere 80% of the assessed materials in the following FinishingElements are responsibly sourced: • Stair • Window • External & internal door • Skirting • Panelling • Furniture • Fascias • Any other significant use • 100% of timber in elements must be legally sourced.

  12. And the future? • Ecopoints per m2 to eventually replace Green Guide • Rewards both reduced environmental impact and efficient design • Still based on Ecoprofiles • Ties in with new European Standards • Needs better design tools e.g. smarter CAD
