  5. General objectives To demonstrate through field trials the provision of interactive and distributive multimedia services (including fast Internet access and Web TV) to real residential users... ... using an end-to-end ATM infrastructure (from the Terminal Equipment to the Multimedia Servers) and various types of Access Networks... ...to finally evaluate trials results to improve the knowledge of likely trends in the area of multimedia services and relevant delivery platforms

  14. Milan trial: main features Started 9 Sept 1997 - Ended May 97 ATM end-to-end infrastructure ADSL Access System up to a 8 Mbps down and 640 kbps up 12 household connected (around 40 users) STB +TV for Interactive Service; PC for Fast Internet Wide offer of video content (500 hours coded material) On demand service bouquet: Movies, News, TV Programs, Documentaries, Sports, Music, Info-Commercial, Weather report Switched Video Broadcasting

  15. Munich trial: main features Running from May 14, 24 hours a day, till August 19 Eleven families connected to the trial HFC and ATM end-to-end based Used frequency in the range from 600 to 860 MHz STB + TV for all services Several German Broadcasting Corporations provided the video material 150 hours of video material available and loaded Interactive services: video-on-demand, news on demand High speed access to the World Wide Web via STB

  16. Global Results Interoperability between the different elements of the delivery chain: the importance of starting with small scale trials before entering larger trials with several hundreds of users has been demonstrated Set up and maintenance of trials with real users: the systems have been operational continuously for months, with only few minor outages Evaluation of different access architecture: ATM over ADSL is feasible as technological access solution and offers great advantages; bi-directional broadband transmission at 155 Mbit/s is feasible using an existing CATV networks; Internet on top of ATM backbone is feasible and effective Feed back on acceptance and usability of the different services: the system is easy to learn and to use; VoD is not enough on its own; content is everything; interest in the Info-commercial service, and especially Tele-shopping has increased since the first trials and Electronic Commerce is emerging
