Kunqu Opera "Peony Pavilion" • The Imperial Grannary edition Kunqu Opera The Peony Pavilion being presented & The sixth anniversary of Kunqu Opera Being selected as A Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity of the UNESCO. • The Peony Pavilion is the masterwork in Chinese drama history and is full of the delicacy and romace of Kunqu Opera. TANG XIANZU (1550-1616), the author, was a great dramatist who lived during Ming Dynasty. He is often mentioned together with the William Shakespeare. • Because of the high-level technical knowledge it also requires from its audience, ancient Kunqu Opera has suffered a gradual decline since the eighteenth century. Kunqu Opera was listed as A Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity of the UNESCO on May 18, 2001.
