GEOSS Purpose and Scope • Meet the need for timely and quality global information for addressing societal benefit areas. • To utilize contributing systems that span the spectrum from primary data observation to data products. • To share data, metadata, and products. • Increase sharing of methods for modeling and analysis. • To encourage the adoption of existing and new standards that support interoperability and data usability. Taxonomy Examples Name: Quality Definition: Standards specific to the procedures and algorithms needed to decrease uncertainty and improve validity of acquired data, and associated processes and systems. Parent: Production Cycle Rules and Standards Name: Quality Assurance Definition: Standards specific to the design of procedures and algorithms necessary to provide confidence that requirements are met prior to data acquisition. Comment: The phrase 'data acquisition’, and variants, will include data received from physical sensors, models, humans, data feeds, etc. May need an associated category for confidence metrics. Lessons Learned • Involve a separate review group. • Limit debate time. • Keep track of potential properties and associations for ontological efforts. • Adopt common phrases for organization and continuity. • Adopt a “glossary” of secondary definitions to support the main vocabulary. Another Standard ? • The ISWG is about to issue a CFP to engage in an effort to look into developing a standard, or guide, or best practice, for creating earth observation taxonomies and ontologies, and creating standards taxonomies and ontologies. • This will be a collaborative effort with existing resources, assets, and experts.
