  39. Have you ever really thought about what a Blue Chip investment is. Blue Chips. Something solid, dependable, something they can build their future on. Everybody's dream... mine, yours, everybody's... is to leave some blue chip investments to their children. Something like American Airlines.   42. Is that what you call a Blue Chip? What is a Blue Chip? You know something funny ... after I came to this country and learned English, I still didn't know what "Blue Chip" meant... Seriously... you know, even now, even after 25 years here, I still translate a lot of what I hear into Russian and I analyze it in Russian and then I ... you know ... I silently translate what I want to say back into English and say it out loud... And the thing is... there is no such expression as "Blue Chips" in Russian.  When I was first learning about investing and I heard someone say "that's a real Blue Chip" I had no idea what they meant.

  43. I couldn't translate it to Russian in my head because there was nothing to translate it to... Russia, going back to the Czars... going back thousands of years before the Czars... was always a dictatorship... a communist dictatorship or a czarist dictatorship or an invading army's dictatorship... whatever... but always a dictatorship... No common person could ever invest in anything... so there was no concept of investments the way we know it. No good investments, no bad investments. No investments at all. No Blue Chips or any other kind of chip... unless you were a member of the aristocracy or the politburo... in that case you had all the chips and it didn't matter what color they were. So, anyway, when I first heard someone say "Blue Chips" I was like an apprentice customer man  and... I didn't want anyone to know how ignorant I was so I pretended to know what they were talking about. Later I looked it up in a dictionary. And the dictionary said blue chips "sell at a high price because of public confidence based on a long record of steady earnings."   44. And for a long time I believed that. But that was in the last century. Now we’re in the 21st Century … Telephone stocks on the pink sheets, airline stocks at $1 or less, big industrials like Ford at $11... Take a smart institutional investor like the University of California. Very conservative, invests only in what the dictionary would define as stocks with “public confidence based on a long record of steady earnings.” In December of 2000, the University of California owned over 11 million shares of a so-called Blue Chip called Time Warner. The stock had a market value of about $800 million. One month later, as we all know, Time Warner engaged in the merger of the millennium with America Online. Two years later – in April -- the University had lost more than $450 million on its Blue-Chip investment and the Regents of the University of California authorized their attorneys to sue AOL Time Warner for fraud. And $450 million was nothing compared to the billions a savvy investor like Ted Turner lost. So much for the dictionary definition of Blue Chip.

It’s that simple, a Blue Chip is where people invest money they really don’t want to risk. A Blue Chip is an investment people perceive as rock solid and safe. A mattress or shoe box is, to some people, is a Blue Chip.

  46. You read about those people in newspapers when they die – usually in low-rent hotel rooms – and a mattress or suitcase full of cash is discovered. Except that if you’re not insane, you know that a mattress or a suitcase or a shoebox is NOT someplace to put money you don’t want to lose. Those things are flammable. Or someone could break into your place and steal the money out of them. And even if the cash in the mattress never catches fire or gets stolen it is losing its value every minute it sits there. I can tell you precisely why… • Remember I told you I looked up "Blue Chip" in the dictionary and I gave you the first definition. • Now... if you want to know why Prudential and Morgan and GE and Solomon etc. are going into the real estate-based companies you have to look at the second dictionary definition of "blue chip..."

What could possibly be a more valuable asset or property than 5 million hectares with 5,000 kilometers of beaches and thousands of hotels, resorts and casinos all over the world... and... and income-producing Entertainment Assets, which are in demand by 6 billion people today and another 2.5 billion more in 35 years?
