  2. Training and Peak Performance • Training program- formalized physical preparation for involvement in a sport or another physical activity • Will vary based on activity or sport • Ex: football player or cross country runner • Who can help create a training program for you??

  3. Taking Care of Your Body while Training • Proper Nutrition • Get enough nutrients; vitamins and minerals important • Eat healthy nutrient dense foods • Hydration • Taking in fluids so body can function • Before, during, and after exercise

  4. Taking Care of Your Body while Training (cont) • Adequate Rest • 8-10 hrs of sleep is important • Body needs to rest and reenergize • Avoiding Harmful Substances • Tobacco-cancer • Alcohol-liver, brain damage, poor decision • Steroids- cancer, heart attack, sterility… • Other drugs- addiction, disease, death

  5. Nutritional Supplements • Any nonfood substance that contains one or more nutrients that the body needs • Need to be careful with supplements • Not regulated by the FDA • Can be helpful if not getting nutrients from food

  6. Safety- reduce risks • Health screening- check for diseases or disorders • Use proper equipment • Play at your skill level • Obey rules and restrictions • Practice good sportsmanship

  7. Personal Safety • Select proper time and place • Ex: metro park alone at night…not a good idea • Use reflective gear, wear bright colors if exercising at night • Effects of weather • Slippery, icy roads/sidewalks • Wear Helmets
