  1. Living in a Globalizing World • Social Studies 10-2

  2. Students … Meet the World . . . World, Meet the Students! • What can be said about our world? • It’s a BIG place! • It has people, places and things! • We depend on it in order to survive • We only have one of it • (we have yet to find a suitable replacement) • 5. Just how big is the world?, just ask Jakko!

  3. How many countries did listed did you recognize? How many of those do you think you have an affect on? How many have an affect on Canada?

  4. Introduction • Our main focus question for the year is: To What Extent Should We Embrace Globalization? • We need to know what globalization is before we can understand that question • Globalization:The process by which the world’s citizens are becoming increasingly connected to and dependent on one another.

  5. We will be looking at different perspectives and points of view: • Perspective:what people believe to be true based on their collective experience as a group; a world view. • Point of View:What individuals believe to be true based on their personal experience.

  6. Did you know that the world has become . . . . • a much smallerplace?

  7. Consider the following . . . • There are approximately 6 billion people in the world! • Humanity exists in differing cultures, lifestyles, in different climates, and survive in varying conditions • We dress differently, worship in different ways and speak different languages • And yet . . . . We really are all the same!

  8. OK Teach, how’s that possible? • It’s very simple – as God’s children, we all • Have basic needs • We share common concerns and dreams • We depend upon our world • We depend upon one another • We’ve created a sense of “sameness” despite our differences – case in point – a conversation in Ghana!

  9. Diversity in Ghana

  10. Globish • Globish yuzaz a simplifaid pranansiashan gaid speling wich marjaz meny av tha vaeulz av Inglish spich.  Pipal spiking dhis speling dialect cud bi andarstud bai adhar Inglish spikarz bat der pranansiashan wud bi cansidard a litl auf. • Globish uses a simplified pronunciation guide spelling which merges many of the vowels of English speech.  People speaking this spelling dialect could be understood by other English speakers but their pronunciation would be considered a little off.

  11. The Global Community has caused our world to evolve into something totally new • This “new world” is presenting many opportunities and challenges – many of which affect us today, and many that will affect us in the future. • Can you think of any opportunities and challenges facing all world citizens today? in the years to come?
