  3. Remember the Core Mission The reason that School Business Managers exist is to be stewards of public money for the purpose of efficiently giving teachers and principals the resources needed to provide an effective learning environment.

The Budget Cycle Revolves around the fiscal year 7/1 to 6/30 June – Proposed budget July - Adopt budget August – Encumbrance period September – Override/bond report October – 40th Day ADM/AFR November – Affidavit for AFR December – Revised budget January – Staffing/100th Day ADM February – Meet and Confer/Budget projections March/April – Board study session/Contracts May – Capital plan/Revised budget

Budgeting Helpful Hints • Aim High • The Devil is in the details. • Anything that is not under your control, check twice. • Revisions are your friend. • Have a back-up plan. • How much is a good contingency in a budget? • You can only spend your budget balance carry-forward once. • Be consistent. • Never second guess the legislature. • Don’t ever cut copy paper, toilet paper, or pencil budgets. • Never assume anything. • Brevity is the Soul of Wit.
