  7. Attention Catcher Examples • Interesting Information • Dolphins use echolocation, a system that allows them to use sound to see. (Reader’s Digest) • Quote • Paul McCartney said, “You can judge a man's true character by the way he treats his fellow animals.” • Anecdote / Story • My cat refuses to drink from a water dish; she will only drink fresh water so I have to turn on the sink multiple times a day to keep her hydrated.

  8. Attention Catcher Source • Place source of fun fact in parenthesis at the end of the sentence containing the fun fact. The period for the sentence belongs afterparenthesis. • Example: • Leopard Geckos can grow back their tails (National Geographic).

  9. Thesis • Big idea of entire essay • One strong sentence at the end of the introduction paragraph • Examples: • Dolphins are the best mammal living in the water. • The best friend a person can have is a cat. • Although terrifying to many people, spiders are important.

  10. Body Paragraphs • Reasons of Support • At least three • Must have details / examples for reasons • Use facts for support • Examples: • Dolphins are smart. From a young age, they talk by squawking, whistling, clicking, and squeaking. • Welsh Corgi dogs are famous. They have been the pets of many queens and kings of England.

Transitions • Utilize transitions to guide the reader through the main ideas and support of essay • Use ELA Handbook for lists of transitions • Without Transitions: • Leopard Geckos are easy to care for. They are a desert animal. Feed and water adult geckos once a week. Change their lighting twice a day. • With Transitions: • Leopard Geckos are easy to care for because they are a desert animal. Adult geckos should be fed and watered once a week. In addition, their lighting must be changed twice a day.

  12. Conclusion • Restate Thesis • Remember: You wrote one for the introduction – use it. • Restate Reasons • Can list them in one sentence • Recommendation Closing Sentence • Leave reader with final punch of persuasion • Example: It is clear that dolphins should be your favorite animal.
