  4. Melvil Dewey In the 1870’s, Melville Dewey created a system to organize and categorize non-fiction books. Books were then labeled with this number and a card was made for every title. These cards were stored in a card catalog, where people would go and look for books.

  5. Catalogs We still label our books with their Dewey Decimal Call Numbers, but instead of a card catalog, most libraries use a computer based catalog system, where people can search the collection on a computer.
