EPSRC Research Fellowships • Fellowship schemes focus on different stages of an academic career: • Postdoctoral Fellowships • New researchers, recently completed a PhD • Career Acceleration Fellowships • supports talented individuals at an early stage of their research career • Leadership Fellowships • Potential to develop into the research leaders of tomorrow

  3. Post Doctoral Fellowships • Enable new researchers recently awarded their PhD to establish a research career • Available in • Mathematical Sciences (at least 7) • Theoretical Physics (up to 5) • Theoretical Computer Science (approx 5) • Life Sciences Interface (up to 10) – up to half total duration spent overseas

  4. Post Doctoral Fellowship - eligibility • No nationality restriction • 0-3 years postdoctoral experience at start date of fellowship • Full time research for 3 years • Apply for salary, and • Funds available for: • computer equipment • consumables (eg books or software) • travel (eg visits to collaborators and conferences)

  6. Career Acceleration Fellowships • Supports talented individuals at an early stage of their research career • Full time research for up to 5 years • Can apply for research costs for whole duration • Staff, equipment etc. • Outline Call now available • Closing date Tuesday 23rd September 2008

Career Acceleration Fellowship - Eligibility • No nationality restrictions • PhD or equivalent • Must not hold a permanent academic post • Should be a research post • Between 3 and 10 years postdoctoral, industrial or equivalent experience • All areas EPSRC research • Key strategic areas highlighted

  8. Leadership Fellowships • Support individuals with potential to develop into UK’s international research leaders of tomorrow • Full time research for up to 5 years • Can apply for research costs • Outline Call now available • Closing date Thursday 9th October 2008

  9. Leadership Fellowship - eligibility • No nationality restrictions • Potential to become international research leader • Must hold a permanent academic post at a UK HEI • All areas of EPSRC research • Key strategic areas highlighted

  12. First steps… • Check eligibility and remit • Ask funding body if necessary • Check Je-S (or equivalent) access • Read supporting documentation carefully • Please check if the call document answers your question before getting in touch with us!

  13. Make early contact with… • Head of Department • Research Office about costings • Also confirm internal procedures for submission • Project partners (Letters of Support?)

A good Case for Support (full version) • Ask colleagues to review your proposal rather than just reading it • Use appropriate fellowship reviewer form • Reviewers are the technical experts • Don’t expect reviewers to read links – all relevant info should be included • Make the reviewer’s job as easy as possible

Help peer reviewers! • Panels have a lot of paperwork! • Clear title & objectives • Make summary understandable • Make it as easy to read as possible! • Limit technical jargon where possible • Explain acronyms on first usage • Consider the nature of the panel membership – not all experts in your research

Your fellowship interview.. • Read and follow guidance sent with invitation • Arrive early • Interview panel membership, if given • look them up in advance • Predict likely questions • Be aware of wider context of your research • Practice presentation and interview • Ask current/past fellows for advice
