Comprehensible Input • Explanation of Academic Tasks It is critical for learners to have instructions presented in a step-by-step manner, preferably accompanied by a visual representation or demonstration of what is expected. Oral directions should always be accompanied by written ones so English learners can refer to them in the future.

  10. Activity Make these directions comprehensible: Scan the paragraphs about Jamestown and Plymouth to find the missing information for the chart on this page. Remember that when you scan, you read quickly to find certain facts or other pieces of information. Use the chart to take notes on what you find. You do not need to write complete sentences. Just write the important words.
