  6. Nursing assistants perform routine tasks under the supervision of nursing and medical staff. They answer patients call bells, deliver messages, serve meals, make beds, and help patients eat, dress, and bathe. CNAs may also provide skin care to patients; take temperatures, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure; and help patients get in and out of bed and walk. They may also escort patients to operating and examining rooms, keep patients rooms neat, set up equipment, or store and move supplies. CNAs observe patients physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any change to the nursing or medical staff.

Most LPNs provide basic bedside care for clients with commonly occurring health problems with predictable outcomes.  They provide personal care, take vital signs such as blood pressure, apply dressings, monitor intravenous fluids, insert catheters, and nasogastric tubes, administer tube feedings and oral and injectable medications.  LPNs collect data and contribute to the establishment of nursing care plans, implement teaching plans, and evaluate clients' needs and progress.

Prerequisites Course No. Course Title Credits • BI121 Elementary Anatomy and Physiology I w/lab (within last 7 years; or BI231 and BI232 if both completed with labs within last 7 years) Note: summer BI121 RVC usually starts 5pm Tu/Th 4 • MTH65 Fundamentals of Algebra II or higher level math 4 • WR115 Introduction to Expository Writing (or designated placement test score as shown on current indicator chart; not required if WR121 already completed) 0-3 • Basic Nursing Assistant course completion (proof of course completion attached to application) OR proof of current (active on registry through November 1) unencumbered OSBN CNA-1 certification attached to application • TOTAL PREREQUISITE CREDITS 8-11 Note: Because of schedule conflicts, timing of course offerings, and the number of hours required for the science lab and nursing assistant clinicals, it is not possible to complete all of the above prereqs in one term.

Required Preparatory Courses—Fall Term if Not Already Completed • CS___Approved 3-4 credit computer science class, CS120 or above (or transcripted “P” for computer proficiency exam) within 10 years 0-4 • BI122 Elementary Anatomy and Physiology II w/lab (within last 7 years or with program director’s approval) or BI233 Human Anatomy and Physiology III (only if student completed BI231 and BI232 as prerequisites) 4 • WR121 English Composition *4 • CPR Health Care Provider course (HE261 or other AHA or ARC adult/infant/child, one and two person course with AED) completed 0-1 later than the September one year before application. • TOTAL PREPARATORY CREDITS 8-13 *3 credit course completed before summer 2009 acceptable

  18. Selection Points 1. A&P I (either BI121 or BI231 inclusive of lab) grade: 5 points for an A, 3 points for a B, 1 point for a C—only if the accepted course (the most recent) is the first time the course has been attempted (an A&P I course that had to be repeated because a previous course had exceeded the 7 year time limit will be counted as the “first” time; science labs must be in physical presence of instructor—no online course). 2. Final term A&P grade: (5 points for an “A”, 3 for a “B”, and 1 for a “C”) for completion of the Anatomy and Physiology sequence (BI 122 or BI 233 with labs. Points will be awarded for grades only if the accepted course [the most recent] is the first time the course has been attempted [an A&P course that had to be repeated because a previous course had exceeded the 7 year time limit will be counted as the “first” time]). If the final A&P course in the sequence was repeated, a maximum of 1 point will be awarded if successfully completed prior to the application deadline.

  19. Selection Points Continued 3. English Composition (WR 121) grade: (5 points for an “A”, 3 for a “B”, and 1 for a “C”) for completion of WR121 prior to the application deadline. 4. Human Relations (PSY 101 or BT 101) grade: and (5 points for an “A”, 3 for a “B”, and 1 for a “C”) for completion of either PSY101 or BT101 prior to the application deadline. 5. Computer literacy: 2 points will be awarded for either Computer Fundamentals I (CS 120 or higher (grade of “C” or better) or “Pass” on RCC computer proficiency exam within 10 years of application deadline. 6. Honorably discharged military veteran: 2 points for military veterans with proof of honorable discharge or active duty military with appropriate documents attached to application (veterans with general discharge or dishonorable discharge will not be awarded points).

Points for non-required course (elective) Medical Terminology (MO100 or AH100 minimum 3-credit regionally accredited college course) grade: (3 points for an “A”, 2 for a “B”, and 1 for a “C”). 8. Points for non-required recent work experience as a CNA: 2 points for documented work experience > 200 hours but less than 800 hours as a CNA (within the previous 1 year) or 5 points for documented work experience >800 hours as a CNA (within the previous 1 year) will be assigned when completed prior to the application deadline. The applicant’s OSBN CNA certification must be current through November 1, 2018. The applicant’s Work Experience form (found with the application) and proof of the OSBN unencumbered CNA certification must be attached to the application to receive the points for work experience. Students who submit incomplete Work Experience forms from their supervisors or who do not submit proof of CNA certification from the OSBN with their application will not be awarded work experience points.

Two points will be awarded to applicants with official transcripts on file showing a previously earned associate or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university. 10. Three points will be awarded to the previous year’s alternates who reapply. 11. A maximum of 16 points is assigned for the word-processed essay/short answer responses to questions regarding diversity, tolerance for stress, conflict resolution, and personal value/ethics. (Applicants will not be notified of score.) 12. A maximum of 20 points is assigned for the applicant’s overall score on the HSRT, an assessment of critical thinking by Insight Assessment. (Applicants will not be notified of score.)

  22. HSRT HSRT: PN applicants will also participate in a proctored administration (using computers) of the Health Sciences Reasoning Test, an assessment of critical thinking by Insight Assessment. Additional information (including suggested resources) will be found on the PN website and application. Up to 20 points will be awarded for the applicant’s overall HSRT score. The HSRT score describes overall strength in using reasoning to form reflective judgments about what to believe or what to do. Practical Nursing students and LPNs must be able to demonstrate sustained, focused and integrated application of core reasoning skills including analysis, interpretation, inference, evaluation, explanation, induction and deduction. The point spread for the HSRT scores will not be published.

  23. Criminal History Check and Urine Drug Screen; CPR; Immunizations Accepted students must undergo and pass a criminal history background check and urine drug screen prior to entering the program. Information regarding both can be found on the program website and will be provided to accepted students before winter practical nursing classes begin. Failed criminal history checks or urine drug screens will be reported to the OSBN. Because of program policies regarding disclosure, any student with any history of arrests or convictions or who believes they will have a positive urine drug screen should make an appointment with the director as soon as accepted to the program (before the end of October). Accepted students must successfully complete a CPR Health Care Provider course (adult/infant/child, one and two person, with AED) within one year prior to September application deadline. Immunization requirements are provided soon after acceptance.
