Insecticidal Activity of Ethanolic Extract of Leaves of Annona squamosa

The objective of the present study is to investigate Insecticidal activity of ethanolic extract of Annana squamosa. The preliminary phytochemical investigation was carried out to identify the various constituents present in the extract. It was found that the Annana squamosa contain alkaloids, protein, amino acid, carbohydrate, glycosides, phytosterols, tannins and phenolic compounds. The ethanol extract of Annona squamosa produced significant “Knockdown” (KD50 ) in the concentration 1% w/v and 5% w/v tested 23.1 min and 11.4 min for respectively. The mortality(100%) was achieved at 39.6±1.4 and 14.5±1.1min for 1% w/v and 5% w/v conc entration respectively. No mortality of the insects was found in any of the controls up to 100hours.The ethanolic Annana squamosa extract showed potent activity against Sitophilus oryzae pest. The finding of new insecticidal activity is of great economic importance both from the agronomic and preventive medicine point of view. The reason for using new natural insecticides is that these are active at highly acceptable levels, biodegradable and do not leave toxic residues while the commonly used phosphorous and chlorinated insecticides contaminate the environment.

Ethanol crude extract of Vernonia amygdalina was fractionated into six (F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, and F6). The different fractions were subjected to in vitro screening to provide preliminary observations required to select the crude plant extract with the best contractile properties for further investigations. Using physiograph uterine tissue contractile amplitudes were determined at 0.25 mg/ml, 0.3 mg/ml, 0.7 mg/ml, 1.0mg/ml, 1.25mg/ml and 1.5mg/ml for the different fractions. Fraction F5 had the best contractile response on isolated uterine tissue in the presence of agonist ACh. F5 was used for further studies on profile of Estrogen and Progesterone.

Antimicrobial activity of mustard against Mackerel fish pathogens

Fish is a nutritionally rich food which is more prone to spoilage. It harbours variety of pathogens. Mustard is medicinally important spice. Isolation of Mackerel fish pathogens was done using selective and differential media. Nutritional characterization of mustard was carried out with respect to carbohydrate, protein and fat content. Antimicrobial activity of mustard against fish pathogen was studied using mustard paste and various mustard extracts. The optimum concentration of the extracts to be used for fish preservation was determined by agar cup diffusion method. Mustard crude oil extract prepared using chloroform and methanol mixture showed prominent antimicrobial activity. Marination effect of mustard paste, mustard crude oil extract and mustard oil revealed the preservative effect of mustard. Thus, the present study promotes the use of mustard as a natural preservative agent for seafood industry. Assessment of Bioactive Activity of Blackberry Seed Extract

The aim of this study was to determine the bioactive activity of the blackberry Rubus laciniatus seed extracts. Total phenolic and total antioxidant activity of blackberry seed extracts were assessed with respect to two extracting solvents absolute ethanol and absolute acetone and two extracting techniques hot extraction at 40u00c2u00b0C and cold extraction at 26u00c2u00b0C . Proximate analysis showed that blackberry seeds contained 12.12 moisture, 8.00 protein, 0.74 fat, 2.15 ash and 76.99 total carbohydrate. The antioxidant activities of blackberry seeds were determined by evaluating total phenolic activity by gallic acid equivalent GAE , total antioxidant capacity by ascorbic acid equivalent AAE content and ferric reducing powder assay. The tested sample showed variable amount of total phenolic content 33.21 56.56 mg GAE g of dry extract , total antioxidant capacity 75.46 82.42 AAE g and reducing power 0.23 0.26 depending on different extraction techniques and solvents used. Higher amount of extract, total antioxidant capacity and reducing power were obtained for hot extraction technique. As compared to cold extraction technique, higher extract yields 7.48 vs 7.19 for ethanol and 4.35 vs 4.28 for acetone and other properties were obtained by hot extraction for a given solvent. Ethanol extract with hot extraction technique gave total phenolic content as 56.56 mg GAE g of dry extract, total antioxidant capacity as 82.42 AAE g and reducing power as 0.26 at extract concentration of 250 u00b5-g ml. The overall observations of the present experiment indicated that hot ethanol extract of blackberry seeds have strong antioxidant property and bioactive activity. Most. Plants provide a wealth of medicinal benefits even for severe illnesses. Medicinal herbs are commonly used to treat and prevent a variety of illnesses.
