Renaissance • 14th and 15th c. • A revival or rebirth of cultural awareness and learning that took place particularly in Italy, but also in Germany and other European countries. • characterized by a renewed interest in ancient Greek & Roman art and design and included emphasis on human beings, their environment, science, and philosophy.

Michelangelo 1475 - 1564 Pieta, St. Peter’s Basilica • sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer • Most well known for his Pieta, and for painting the Sistine Chapel ceiling • Very muscular figures • Ability to paint and sculpt figures with distorted proportions to compensate for curved ceilings and low viewpoints

  6. (RaffaelloSanzio) Raphael 1483 –1520 St. Catherine, 1508 • an Italianpainter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur

Leonardo da Vinci April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519 an Italian Renaissance polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer whose genius -perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal. -- -often been described as the archetype of the Renaissance Man, a man of "unquenchable curiosity" and "feverishly inventive imagination". -He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived.

  10. Baroque Period • The art movement in the 17th century in Rome, Italy • Exemplified by drama and grandeur in sculpture, painting, literature, dance, and music. In painting abundant amount of details, bright polychromic (many colors), • Overall sense of awe

Michelangelo Caravaggio • An Italian artist active in Rome, Naples, Malta, and Sicily between 1593-1610. • He was the first great representative of the Baroque school of painting, noted for his intensely emotional canvases and dramatic use of lighting. • He is widely considered one of the greatest painters in European history.

Peter Paul Rubens 1577 -1640 Mars and Rhea Silvia • Flemish Baroque painter, and a proponent of an extravagant Baroque style that emphasized movement, color, and sensuality. • He is well-known for his Counter-Reformationaltarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. • In addition to running a large studio in Antwerp that produced paintings popular with nobility and art collectors throughout Europe, Rubens was a classically educated humanist scholar, art collector, and diplomat who was knighted by both Philip IV, King of Spain, and Charles I, King of England.

Paul Gauguin 1848 - -1943 Woman with Mango, 1892 • French, Post-Impressionist Painter • Known for his experimental use of color in his work while living in Tahiti • Painted the women of Tahiti as he saw them - as impassive, mysterious, brooding, and sometimes sinister • Interested in capturing his own feelings through color and composition

  18. Complementary Colors • colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel, such as red and green. When used near each other, complementary colors create a strong contrast. • When 2 complementary colors are combined, they make a neutral (brown, grey)

  21. 3 Analogous + a Complement • Any three colors next to each other on the color wheel and one of the color’s complements, such as red, red-orange, and orange with green.

  22. Compositional Lay-out • Rule of Thirds – a method for balancing the elements in an image by dividing the composition into equal thirds .

  23. Rule of Thirds • Objects that appear at the intersections of the vertical and horizontal lines look most pleasing to the eye

  24. Land and sea horizons look much more pleasing using the rule of thirds.

Diagonals Anthony van Dyck, Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness. • Diagonal is a line having an oblique or slanted direction, running either from the upper left to lower right corner of picture or running from the upper right to lower left corner. Compositions with domination of horizontal and vertical lines are architectonical and static. • In comparison with them compositions comprised of diagonal lines are dynamic.

What is the action? • Running away from someone? Falling?

  28. 3 homeworks due May 22ndSeniors – May 17th • 1. Free draw – draw what your heart desires, using what ever medium you want to challenge yourself • 2. Draw a friend/family member sitting. Must be proportionally correct. Draw the object they are sitting on and design Baroque/Tahitian clothing for them. Must be colored using 3 Analogous + a complement. • 3. Draw a person in an action pose. Must be proportionally correct. Design Baroque/Tahitian clothing for them. Must be colored using all neutrals + 1 color (red, blue)
