  1. Dippy the Dinosaur By: Tess Weaver Dippy the dinosaur, is a sculpture outside of Carnegie museum , and inside the museum, showing the Carnegie scientist first discover of dinosaurs. Dippy is a symbol to Pittsburgh showing how we make discoveries too.

What is Dippy? • Dippy isn’t just the name of something but is the name of the longest dinosaur ever found. • The dinosaur Dippy is a Diplodocus carnegii. • Diplodocus carnegiiwas named after Andrew Carnegie after his support for the expedition. • The dinosaur Dippy would have weighed up to about 11 tons, had a flexible neck, and pencil like teeth.

Who found Dippy’s fossils It all started when… • Andrew Carnegie wanted to give something to Pittsburgh, he wanted a dinosaur for the museum. • He later realized they needed something new to bring to the museum. • Mr. Carnegie sent some scientist to Wyoming in the year 1898 to search. • Then in another year they would find the Diplodocus carnegiialso know as Dippy.

  6. When was Dippy found? • Wyoming, USA on July 4th 1899. • Not only was a great dinosaur discovered, but almost all the fossils could make up the dinosaur. • This allowed tourist to come to Pittsburgh and the opportunity for Pittsburgh’s name to be spread throughout the world.

  7. How Dippy lived? Jurassic Period Diplodocus carnegii When the Diplodocus carnegii roamed the earth they were plant eaters and traveled in herds. These dinosaurs lived in the Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming regions. Wyoming is where the scientist discovered Dippy. He has made Pittsburgh famous for having one of the best species of dinosaurs around.

Why is Dippy important to Pittsburgh? • Dippy is important to Pittsburgh because, he allows people everywhere in the world to know his name and the city of Pittsburgh. • Dippy brings the history that so many people want to know about. • Dippy shows that the city of Pittsburgh can accomplish anything if they work hard to find it. • Lastly, Dippy shows the world that Pittsburgh has more exciting things to see.

More facts… • Dippy was first mounted in 1904, and unveiled in 1907 • Dippy is the longest mounted Dinosaur. • The sculpture you see outside the museum of Dippy was created in 1999 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the expedition. • It took nine months to complete Dippy. • Sometimes you can see Dippy cheering on the Steelers with a terrible towel around him • Sometimes you can see Dippy wearing a scarf in winter
