Career Choices Textbook • It’s important that we follow the material in the Career Choices textbook in sequence because each part builds on the previous part. • This is why it’s important to keep up with the work. Often one assignment might refer you back to a previous assignment and if that assignment is not done you will not be able to move forward

  2. 15 Year Plan for your LIFE • Why write a fifteen year plan? • to help you realize your goals and dreams • to teach you a systematic process for choosing your future career and life direction.

  3. Chapter 1 Envisioning Your Future How do you define success?

  4. What to get out of this chapter • To help students realize that success does not come just from daydreaming, but from combining a vision with appropriate and necessary actions. • To have students begin imagining the kind of future they would find most satisfying. • To illustrate that work is not just a way to earn a living, but an important part of most people’s identity. • To allow students to recognize the scope and diversity of every individual’s accomplishments on a daily basis. • To help students identify their own decision-making patterns and evaluate their effectiveness.

  5. Chapter 1 Vocab • Copy vocab into workbook • Read vocab words once a night for homework • To prepare for vocab test at the end of the chapter.

  6. elaborate: to explain in detail • gamut: the full or complete range of things • vision: a dream • realization: to make something real • frustration: a feeling arising when hindered in trying to reach a goal • security: feeling safe and certain; no apprehension or anxiety • discrimination: wrongful treatment of a person (or group) due to a bias or prejudice • achievement: accomplishing something rewarding • fanatic: someone excessively devoted to or enthusiastic about a cause or activity • excess: more of something than is necessary • flaunt: to exhibit something (an achievement or prize) a little too proudly • prima donna: an overly vain person • integrity: free from corruption or vice; honesty • humility: a lack of false pride; feeling modest or unassuming • intuition: instinctive knowing; a feeling that something might happen; second sight • impulsive: actions typified by a lack of planning or preparing • procrastination: putting an assignment or task off until a later time; dawdling • compliant: easily persuaded or swayed; submissive • rational: logical or sensible • interchangeable: being able to change places or replace something else

Vision + Energy = Success • Vision and energy are the most important elements in getting what you want in life. • Vision is your dream • Energy is the action you must take • To be successful you must have both vision and energy • Read pg. 10-12 • Complete the page that matches pg. 13 in your workbook

Envisioning your future • Imagine your ideal career. • What is the setting? • What are your tasks? • Are you working alone or with others? • How do you feel about yourself? • Read pg. 14and write out your vision as of now…remember it is ok to change your mind as you discover more about yourself.

  9. Why do people work? • Survival • Define themselves • Self-respect • Measure self-worth • Conquer time • Sense of security • Read pg.15-16 • Rank the 6 items in the margin (under the 14) that suits your reasons. • Compare with class.

I am a… • Read pg 17 • Complete the page that matches pg. 17 in your workbook • List all of your activities, jobs, sports, “things you have to do” • Complete the “I am” statement by turning all of the things you do into job titles (STUDENT, cook, gardener, athlete, musician, etc). • Words to describe feelings of accomplishments…choose the ones that work for you. • Gratifying, honorable, reputable, excellent, valuable, positive, satisfied, admirable, gratified, respectable, deserving, reputable, decent, wonderful, impressive, distinguished, outstanding, courageous, capable, able, tough, able-bodied, powerful, etc.

  11. Defining Success • Success is the achievement of something desired, planned, or attempted. • Success comes when you achieve something that is important to you • Complete the page that matches pg. 18-19 in your workbook

  12. Making Career Choices • Read pg. 20 and complete the page that matches pg. 20 in your workbook • Reviewing your Defining Success selections, focus on the Agree and Strongly Agree. Read through each quote and come up with your definition of success! Complete the page that matches pg. 21 in your workbook.

  13. Job or Career there IS a difference • A job is a particular task. It is usually done with very little preparation or training.   14. Be Self Directed • Meaning, under one's own control. • Showing initiative and the ability to organize oneself. • It’s your life and future you must direct it. • You should strive for self direction if you want to successfully manage the changes and challenges in life.

  15. Chapter 1 Vocab TEST • Complete the Vocab Crossword • You will have a test/quiz on them!!
