  4. I. Live no Longer as Gentiles – vs. 17–19 • Gentiles – those of the world without a relationship with God • Confronting lifestyles that hinder Christ flowing though us • Confronting things that give ground to the adversary

  5. Hopelessly confused • Minds full of darkness • Closed minds and hardened hearts • Far from the life God gives • No shame • Live for lustful pleasure • Practice every kind of impurity

  6. II. Transformed by Renewed Minds – vs. 20–24 • Put off and put on • Off – old sinful nature • On – new nature, created to be like God • 2 Corinthians 5:17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! • Spirit renewed thoughts and attitudes

  7. Wrong behavior results from wrong thinking • Wrong thinking results from hearts hardened toward God • Hard heartedness towards God results from the rejection of the revelation of God that leads to the worship of God

  8. Romans 1:18-32 • Know the truth about God – He has made it obvious • But they wouldn’t worship him • God abandoned them to their foolish thinking • Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness

  9. Romans 12:2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

  10. Romans 8:1-2, 5-8 • The power of the Spirit has freed you from the power of sin

  11. Dominated by sinful nature • Think about sinful things • Leads to death • Hostile to God • Can never please God • Controlled by the Spirit • Think about things that please the Spirit • Life and peace • Put off and put on – act of your will - choice

  12. III. Changed Behavior - vs.25-31 • Stop: • Lying • Stealing • Abusive speech • Don’t bring sorrow to the Holy Spirit • Contrast: • Speak the truth • Work hard and be generous • Encouraging words • The Holy Spirit has identified you as his own – guaranteeing your salvation

  13. Controlled by anger – Foothold to the devil • Foothold – (Greek – “topos”) – topography • Literal terrain – area of jurisdiction

  14. Proverbs 16:32 "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city.“ • Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, slander

  15. Ephesians 5:15-18 • Be careful how you live • Don’t live like fools • Understand what the Lord wants you to do • Be filled with the Spirit

  16. Interactive Time • How is a person renewed by the Spirit in their thoughts and attitudes? How does that affect one’s behavior? • How do we bring sorrow to, or grieve, the Spirit of God? • What does it mean to not let the sun go down on your anger?
