  1. Lesson Objectives: • To identify the main land uses in different Urban Zones • Be able to describe and account for differences in land use from the CBD to the edge of the city

Main Land Uses of CBD • Offices • Accessible by networks (Central station, M8, M74, Buchanan Bus Station) • Can afford high rents (specialist and make high profit) • Agglomeration of services and offices e.g. Argyll Arcade • Comparison Shops • Can afford high rents • High pedestrian flow…. More potential customers • Buchanan Galleries/ Princess Square • Anchor shops • Good transport links e.g queen st or central station. Accessible for workers and customers • Convenience Shops • Services to offices/shoppers/ tourists for Lunches / newspaper /sweets • Public Buildings • Victorian City – City Chambers, Cathedral, shows oldest part of city and Victorian wealth

Main Land Uses of Inner City • Residential • C19th workers lived by work – lack of transport and lack of money to move elsewhere • Industry • Clydeside shipbuilding/ Iron works near raw materials and transport links e.g canal, river or rail • Convenience shops • Cheaper rents, low cost food, still enough workers and houses to supply • Lack of comparison shops: not an up market location/ lack of prestige • Open spaces • Glasgow green: leisure and fresh air in C20th

  5. Main Land Uses of Outer Zone • Residential • Quiet upbringing for family, cheaper land so can afford gardens, away from pollution • Open Spaces • Rouken Glen Park, golf courses. Leisure pursuits at weekend. People have more free time and money • Conv Shops • Amenities around all residential areas to cater for everyday needs • Offices • Cheaper rents for small firms, estate agents prefer to be in suburbs for networking
