  3. Introduction to NAFEMS

  4. What is NAFEMS? An independent not-for-profit body with sole aim of promoting the effective use of engineering simulation methods. • Founded in 1990, it is the international association for the engineering analysis community • More than 1,000 membership associations across the world • Information source for the latest CAE technology developments • Source of best practice guides for the use of analysis technology • Provider of independent events where practicing analysts exchange knowledge and experience

  5. NAFEMS Organizational Structure • Meets four times / year; 11 members • CoM Chair – Costas Stavrinidis • NA Chair - Rod Dreisbach Council of Management Regional Steering Committees NAFEMS CEO Technical Liaison Group Tech Working Groups NAFEMS Core Group • Includes: • TLG Chairman – Paul Newton • NAFEMS CEO – Tim Morris • Council member • Chair from each TWG • Core Group: • Organization infrastructure & services (accounts, marketing, member services, etc.)

  6. Strategy: Principal Aims Improve the professional status of all persons who use engineering simulation Establish best practices in engineering simulation Provide a focal point for the exchange of information and knowledge relating to engineering simulation Encourage collaboration and communication Promote the use of simulation Improve the education and training in the use of simulation techniques Be recognised as a valued independent authority that operates with neutrality and integrity 6

  7. Some Example Members

  8. NAFEMS Member Industries Encompassing many industries… 8

  9. NAFEMS Member Sectors Across four sectors… 9

  10. NAFEMS Member Regions In over 50 countries… 10

  11. Activities 12

  12. Guidelines (Publications) • 150+ books published, including: • Benchmarks for software verification • Quality Systems and Procedures • Primers • “Why Do .....” • “How To......”

  13. How does NAFEMS training fit? Members Knowledge and Experience Training Training Training Training Benchmarks, Primers, etc. Working Groups 15

  14. E-learning and physical training E-Learning (globally available) Measured pace – time to do homework and interact over 8 to 12 week period Off-Line discussion, blend in with other training or mentoring activities No travel cost, lower fees Adaptable to your work schedule Physical Training Highly Interactive – Q and A, shared experience etc. Scenarios, Role Playing The course ‘follows its nose’ – wide range of skill levels and requirements can be met

  15. e-Learning Courses NAFEMS Training also offers a wide variety of e-Learning courses including: Basic FE Analysis Composite FE Analysis Dynamic FE Analysis Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics in FE Analysis Non-Linear Analysis Structural Optimisation in FE Analysis Introduction to CFD Essential Fluid Dynamics for CFD and more….. 17

  16. Activities 18

  17. Events • Events are organised regionally. • Each year >50 events, including: • Seminars • Courses • Webinars • Workshops • Conferences • Opportunity for exchange of expertise • Arranged by Regional Steering Committees

  18. NAFEMS / INCOSE Relationship

  19. One Example of Systems Integration • In many cases: • Sensors: collect data regarding the state of the mechanical system (engineering analysis) • Control modules: using the sensor information compute the necessary actuation to advance the mechanical system in the desired state • Actuators: apply the (mechanical) loading (e.g., electric motors, hydraulic pistons) computed by the control modules. 21

  20. Logical-Physical Co-Simulation 22 Rigid MBD components Hydraulic circuit Deformable mechanical components Load sensing circuit Soil model Logical Physical

  21. Model-based SE approach * Verifikation des Systems Validierung der Anforderungen Environment model Environment model Model Model Model Model Model Model Model Model Simulation with virtual models Hardware integration & test Reality meets model Early Integration Component Component Component Component Environment model Emulation Eg. Incoming inspection / acceptance Test cases Common Test cases Test cases Test cases Component Component Component * Unity AG

  22. Opportunities and benefits • Documentation • Requirements shall be fully traceable down to the component design • Needed for assessments • Different documentation for different stakeholders • Simulation • Build up the system in a simulation environment to reduce HW costs • Verify the simulation components by comparison with “real-world” elements • Optimization • To build more effective systems simulation shall be used for evaluation • Automatic variation of system parameters • System Integration & Test • Early integration of components tested against simulated environment • Simulation on test bench has to fulfill real-time requirements

  23. Simulation drives decisions throughout the product lifecycle Customer experience Voice of Customer Requirement Simulation and Test Correlation Low Fidelity System System Acceptance Functional Subsystems Simulation (Decomposition) Subsystem test Components Logical Integration Integration Test Physical High Fidelity

  24. Virtual Engineering Two organization putting there efforts together NAFEMS Traditional Simulation as discussed earlier INCOSE Traditional System Engineering as mentioned earlier Model-Based System Engineering Systems Modeling and Simulation Working Group (SMSWG)

  25. Beginnings of the Systems Modeling and Simulation Working Group (SMSWG)  The following individuals participated in a collaborative meeting to proceed with forming a NAFEMS Technical Working Group to develop recommendations for mutual collaboration. The NAFEMS Representatives were as follows: Tim Morris, NAFEMS Chief Executive Michele Ringrose, NAFEMS North American Representative Rodney Dreisbach, NAFEMS Americas Steering Committee, Chairman Edward Ladzinski, NAFEMS Americas Steering Committee The INCOSE representatives were as follows:  Samantha Robitaille, INCOSE President John Thomas, INCOSE President Elect Jean-Claude Roussel, INCOSE Technical Director Ralf Hartmann, INCOSE Director for Strategy Holly Witte, INCOSE Executive Management Objective: • NAFEMS and INCOSE agreed to a mutually beneficial strategy to develop a collaborative relationship that would benefit both the organizations and their members. 27

  26. Systems Modeling and Simulation Working Group (SMSWG) The mission of the NAFEMS / INCOSE Systems Modeling & Simulation Working Group (SMSWG) is to develop a vendor-neutral, end-user driven consortium that not only promotes the advancement of the technology and practices associated with integration of engineering analysis and systems engineering, but also acts as the advisory body to drive strategic direction for technology development and standards in the space of complex engineering. This group will support activities that bridge engineering analysis and systems engineering to provide digital solutions to represent real life experiences; and optimize the integration of systems engineering and simulation solutions for both OEM and supplier; This includes education, communication, promotion of standards, and development of requirements that will have general benefits to the simulation and analysis community with the identification of benchmarks and major strategic issues (grand challenges). Objective: • NAFEMS and INCOSE agreed to a mutually beneficial strategy to develop a collaborative relationship that would benefit both the organizations and their members. 28

  27. Why Participate? • Define the Frontier • Help to establish Global Engineering Systems cross-industry Community with one vision…

  28. Commitment • Evangelize the Virtual Engineering user experience through collaborative leadership for Engineering Systems • INCOSE + NAFEMS = 10,000 members • Broadcast to all industry segments • Branch initiatives into each geo (Americas, Europe/Africa, Asia) • Create a viral Virtual Engineering environment
