  1. SAFETY AND THE INTERNET

    MSTI 131 Courtney Niemet March 23, 2010
  2. ADVANTAGES OF USING THE INTERNET AT HOME AND SCHOOL E-mail: You can send and receive instant electronic messages to people anywhere in the world, unlike traditional mail that takes a lot of time. Access Information: Information is probably the biggest advantage internet is offering. Search engines on the Internet can help you to find data on any subject that you need. Services: Many services are now provided on the internet such as online banking, job seeking, purchasing tickets for your favorite movies, guidance services, and hotel reservations. Downloading Software: This is one of the most common and fun things to do on the Internet. You can download games, music, videos, movies, and a host of other entertainment software from the Internet, most of which are free. Shopping: There are many online stores and sites that can be used to look for products as well as buy them using your credit card. You do not need to leave your house and can do all your shopping from the convenience of your home. Online Chat: There are many chat rooms on the web that can be accessed to meet new people, make new friends, as well as to stay in touch with old friends.
  3. DISADVANTAGES OF USING THE INTERNET AT HOME AND SCHOOL Theft of Personal information: If you use the Internet, you may be facing grave danger as your personal information such as name, address, credit card number. Spamming: Spamming refers to sending unwanted e-mails in bulk, which provide no purpose and needlessly obstruct the entire system. Virus threat: Virus is nothing but a program which disrupts the normal functioning of your computer systems. Computers attached to internet are more prone to virus attacks and they can end up into crashing your whole hard disk. Pornography: This is perhaps the biggest threat related to your children’s healthy mental life. There are thousands of pornographic sites on the Internet that can be easily found and can be a detrimental factor to letting children use the Internet. Inaccurate Information: Though there are many legitimate websites full of factual information there are a plethora of sites with inaccurate information and it is often hard to tell the difference. Isolation: Using the Internet for long periods of time can isolate people from family and friends. Though many develop online relationships these "cyber" buddies cannot replace "real life" socializing.
  4. WHAT CAN PARENTS DO TO HELP? Spend time online with your children and check out sites together. Help your children use the internet as an effective research tool but have them understand that the wed is not always reliable. Encourage your children to be careful about giving out personal information on the internet. Make your child aware of stranger danger, particularly in chat rooms. Talk to your children about their online experiences both good and bad. Teach your children about dealing with disturbing material and leaving sites. Know the best ways of avoiding spam and using filters, labels and safe zones Learn what young people learn – parents need to know about chatting, blogging, messgae boards, facebook, myspace, and youtube.
  5. WHAT CAN TEACHERSDO TO HELP? Teachers need to help students use the Internet appropriately and safely. When children go online they face new dangers and need more protection. Block some websites in the classroom. Monitor children's media viewing. Some images are extremely frightening to children, so consider limiting the amount of media coverage they see. Schools can also sign up to the Anti-bullying Charter to show their commitment to tackling all forms of bullying, and use the principles of the Charter to self-evaluate their anti-bullying policies and practices. Suggest kid friendly sights and encourage children to visit them.
