  1. Research Paper • What is plagiarism? • It is thedeliberate presentation of words, facts, or ideas belonging to another source without proper acknowledgement. • Do not allow the words to resemble the original - even if you cite the source.

  2. What do you document? • Every direct quote • Every idea you take from another source • Do not document common knowledge: • George Washington was the first president of the United States.

  3. How do you formulate a thesis? • Your thesis should go from a concrete point to an abstract point (the actual theme of your paper). • Ex: Edgar Allan Poe uses horror,_vivid diction____, and_metaphorical language_____ to emphasize the dual nature of man. • The concrete criticism section of your paper will discuss Poe’s use of horror, etc. Your comparative study, which is more abstract, will discuss the dual nature of man in two of his stories. • Formulate your thesis by thinking of a general topic about life’s themes, then a specific subject to use in your comparative study.

  4. Thesis • Your thesis is the unifying idea of your paper. It should act as the mortar to hold your paper together. • It should also present an arguable position. Your research then is the defense of your proposition. • Take the reverse of the obvious. You cannot prove a fact. The fact is your topic (general statement). You are proving your opinion, the abstract statement.

  5. Thesis • Poe’s psychological character studies have had gruesome effects on many readers. • What is the general (concrete) topic? • What is the opinion that the research will prove?

  6. Thesis Active an Passive • The dark side of human nature is revealed in Poe’s stories through an effective first person point of view, a moody setting, and a strong theme. • Revision- avoid passive voice in your paper • Poe reveals the dark side of human nature through etc.
