  4. The Different Types of Urban Areas Million City A city with a population of over five million. Super City Cities of power based on trade, political strength, innovation and communication. Megacity A city with a population of more than one million. World City A city with a population of over ten million. (Be careful as definitions for this can vary)

  5. Use the following table of results to help complete your map..

  6. Your map illustrates the longest standing megacities (since 1962). There are now a considerable amount more.

  7. How have urban areas grown? • For a city to grow, two processes are key: • Natural Increase (generally taken to be about 60%) • Migration (generally taken to be about 30%) • The remaining10% can be accounted for by the reclassification of rural areas. • The poorest areas of the world have the fastest urban growth rates and migration tends to dominate growth.
