  1. College 101: Information Session “First say to yourself what you would be; and then do what you have to do.” -Epictetus

  2. Parents’ role in the college process • Every family is different and has its limits, but as much as possible, the family (presumably parents… if not Grandma, older sibling etc..) should participate with the student. Read the paperwork, understand exactly what needs to be done (for admissions, financial aid, housing, etc…) and attend orientation with the student. • Beginning college is a big step and the student is going to need your continuous support and understanding to help them adjust to the college environment. A website that is helpful for parents with college bound students is www.collegeboard.com

  3. Applying to college

  4. Myths about college • College is all about “FUN”:College is not about fun and parties; on the contrary, college is about discipline, focus, and determination. Professors do not care if the student did not turn in their paper because they overslept due to late-night partying. They do not care for excuses and will not accept any excuses. They expect the student to be focused on learning and studying for their class. • Freedom from Parents: Yes, students do have freedom from parents if they are living on campus, but the freedom is not all it’s cracked up to be. Students are forced to make their own decisions without Mommy and Daddy’s input. • College is Easy: College courses are more time-consuming than high-school classes. For every hour of class, at least two hours of studying is needed

  5. Financial aid • What is FAFSA? • FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid that every student going into college is required to submit anually. The FAFSA should be filled out as soon as possible, and at the start of the spring semester for continuing college students. The key to finding out how much aid the student will receive is the FAFSA • The website to access the FAFSA application is www.fafsa.ed.gov What is HESAA? HESAA is the Higher Education Association for Student Aid Authority, this is the office in which Tuition Aid Grant(TAG) is dispensed to college students who reside in New Jersey and are attending school in-state. The website to access HESAA is www.hesaa.org
