  1. Dutiful By Margaret Atwood

  2. 1. What theme would best fit with Atwood’s message? • One does not have to continually sacrifice their own happiness for the happiness of others to be a good person. • Guilt should not be the motivator for doing the right thing. • Social responsibility is everyone’s responsibility and individuals should not shoulder the burden for all. • We feel compelled to try to help others, even when it is detrimental to ourselves.

  3. This poem is an example of: • Free verse (with Rhyming couplets) • A bit of a trick!

  4. Give an example of simile • “grumpy as a snake”

  5. 4. How would you describe the speaker of the poem? What type of person would they be? • The speaker seems concerned with others, and also seems wise for their years. Within the text they refer to wearing necklace, which leads me to believe they are probably a middle age woman, in a helping job like a nurse or social worker.

  6. 5. What does the speaker men when she says that she will now “eat flowers I didn’t grow” • The speaker will now spend less time doing activities that she may not enjoy, and take more time for herself. Tending a garden is a lot of work, and now she will just purchase her flowers and spend time doing other things.

  7. 6. Which of these quotes would fit with the message of this poem? • All quotes could be considered. • It would be the student’s job to explain in a manner where the quote choice fits the theme given. • The student would need to support why they believe the quote would be the best fit.
