Analogies are Word Relationships
Learning Targets • I can explain the function of an analogy. • I can identify/analyze the relationship of an analogy.
A definition… • An analogy is a comparison between two things, and the comparison is used to determine the relationship between different sets of things. Bark is to dog as meow is to cat.
Many Different Types of Analogies • Synonym to antonym: hot is to cold • Part to whole: core is to apple • Function to thing: cook is to stove • Characteristic to thing: slippery is to ice • Product to thing: milk is to cow
Cause and Effect rain is to umbrella as hungry is to eat fire is to smoke as diet is to lose weight thirsty : drink :: study : make good grades • pairs that show one as a direct result of the other, sometimes showing an action
General to Specific school is to Arlington Elementary as fruit is to apple dog is to German Shepherd as student is to Giavani color : blue :: river : Nile • pairs that show the first word as a broad term and the second word as a specific term in the same category
Guidelines to solve analogies • decide upon the relationship between first 2 words • state the relationship - car is to tire because___________ • examine the third word – chair • select a fourth word that will make the third-fourth word have the same relationship as the first-second word • be ready to explain your fourth word selection Car is to tire as chair is to ______.
Now what do you think? • Is this analogy correct?
