  1. The Temperance Movement By: Kevin Murray Period 6 10/28/10

  2. The Problem • Most of the movement’s leaders were clergy interested in doing away with social evils, poverty, and crime that were often brought on by heavy drinking.

  3. Causes of Problem • Most religions prohibited drinking alcohol. • If you drank alcohol it would be considered a sin. • Most people disobeyed the church’s rule and drank alcohol anyways.

  4. Solutions • Created the United States Temperance Union in 1833. • Persuaded people to give up their alcoholic ways.

  5. Impacts/Effects • In 1851 Maine passed the first state prohibition law. • Other states passed “local option” laws, which allowed towns and villages to prohibit the sale of liquor.

  6. Impact Today? • Drinking isn’t looked at as a sin and is considered legal. • Although there still may be some crimes caused by heavy drinking it is not as bad in the past because of alcoholic limitation within certain laws. (Age:21)

  7. Questions • Why did the clergy want to get rid of drinking? • Did the United States Temperance Union lead to prohibition laws, if so which ones? • Is drinking laws different now then in the past? Explain.
