Operation ALTHEA OpCdr :GenSir Richard Shirreff (NATO) FCdr :Maj Gen Robert Brieger (AT) • Dec 2004: NATO SFOR  EUFOR • Initially 7,000 troops: now ~1,200 • 19 EU Member States, 5 non- EU TCN • “Berlin +” with Operation HQ at SHAPE • FHQ in Sarajevo • Main Objectives: • To support BiH efforts to maintain Safe and Secure Environment • To contribute to capacity building & training of Armed Forces of BiH.

Haradeere Operation EUNAVFOR ATALANTA OpCdr : Rear Admiral Duncan Potts • Launched in Dec 2008 • First CSDP naval operation • Mandate extended to Dec 2014 • OHQ Northwood - FHQ afloat • UNSCR 1950 (2010) EUNAVFOR is to protect WFP shipping, other vulnerable shipping, deter, prevent and intervene in order to bring to an end acts of piracy .

EU Training Mission (EUTM) Somalia MCdr:Col Michael Beary (IE) • Launched Apr 2010, extended until Dec 2012 • Troop strength: max 140 • Currently 3rd Intake of trainees • EU MHQ Kampala + Spt Cell Brussels & Liaison Office Nairobi • Training Camp Bihanga (Uganda) • Refocused Mandate: • 2 six month training periods • Training specialists, & commanders of 4 infantry companies • Train the Trainers

  9. Aim: The operation was aimed at underpinning the mandates of UNSCRs 1970 and 1973. Mission: If requested by OCHA, conduct a military operation in the framework of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) in order to support humanitarian assistance in the region. Tasks: EUFOR Libya, if requested by the UN, will: contribute to the safe movement and evacuation of displaced persons,  support, with specific capabilities, the humanitarian agencies in their activities. Non-Combatant Evacuation Operation (NEO) of European Citizens EU / ECHO Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) activated as EU lead for evacuation of EU Nationals from Libya EUMS Movement Planning Cell (MPC) activated - support to MIC EUMS  LNO to Malta (multi-national NEO Coordination Cell) LIBYA: non-CSDP Actions Evaluation of Third Country Nationals • Close liaison with ECHO MIC • Movement and Planning Cell (EUMS) coordinated requests for EU military assets to support evacuation of TCNs • Coordination with ECHO/MIC and IOM: • on-site Operations Coordination Centre in Tunisia • horizontal coordination on site & in Brussels • vertical coordination from Tunisia to Brussels
