  3. The Imbalanced India • The child sex ratio has alarmingly decreased in most of the Indian states. • 70 districts in 16 states got 50+ decline in the child sex ratio. • Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Gujarat top the red list.

  4. Number of girls per 1000 boys in the 0-6 age group. • 976 girls per thousand boys in 1961. • 964 girls per thousand boys in 1971. • 945 girls per thousand boys in 1991. • 927 girls per thousand boys in 2001. • The number has gone even lower in past few years.

(CSR < 800) • Average CSR = 927. • The Biggest Culprits • Punjab (783 in Amritsar) • Haryana (770in Kurukshetra) • Delhi (845 in South West Delhi) • Gujarat (814 in Ahmedabad) • Even though these are amongst • the most prosperous regions.

Why Sons are Preferred? • Because of the age old myths… • Only sons will be of help in old age. • Daughter means huge dowry amount. • Son is an asset and Daughter is a liability. • Daughter is a “Paraya dhan”. • Only a son can perform the last rites for parents. • Only a son can carry forward the family name.

  8. The Consequences ?CrimeAgainstwomen • Increase in the crime rate against women. • Natural and societal imbalance. • Metros have become unsafe for women. • Girls are deprived of basic education. If this trend continues, the situation will be unexpectedly worrisome.

  9. Is there any solution? No problem is without a solution! • Empower the girls. • Support the education of underprivileged girls around you. • Boost up the confidence of girl children. • Encourage them to be self dependent. Educate yourself and others about the consequences of such cruel acts.

The Shakti Programme • We support education of the daughters of widows / handicapped parents or war martyrs. • Pledge to support the education up to class twelfth. • Support given irrespective of religion, caste or language. • 850 + girls of Gurdaspur and 759 girls of Chandigarh have been extended support through Shakti. • Presently, 125 + girls are pursuing their education with the help of Shakti.

  13. More Good News • Shakti cover expanded to support professional courses also. • 5 B-Pharmacy girl students in G.V.M. college of Pharmacy, Sonepat supported. • Besides, 45 girl students of Institute of Nursing Education, Ludhiana are being provided financial support for their education.

  14. New Portals • Computer Education Awareness Program (CEAP) started for girls of Sonepat Schools • 20 Govt. Girls Schools have been covered. • Around 3,000 girls have benefited from this workshop. • CEAP has made girls more confident and self respecting. • CEAP has helped them become self dependent and open the doors to myriad career options.
