  1. The PS Booster:Origin and ConstructionGiorgio Brianti G. Brianti

  2. Early PS (John Adams 25 nov. 1959) 1960 Intensity 1010 ppp around 1965 1012 ppp main intensity limitation Laslett tune spread prop. to b- 1g- 2 G. Brianti

  3. December 1965 • Last Council meeting of Director-General Viktor Weisskopf • Projects appproved: ISR, BEBC, PS improvements • PS: i) New power supply to increase rep. rate ii) Higher intensity (1013 protons/pulse) G. Brianti

  4. Studies 1966 - 1967 • PS int. 10 12 ppp: main intensity limitation Laslett tune spread prop. tob- 1 g- 2 • Injection energy: about 10 times higher • 10 13 ppp, higher density (for ISR) • Linac or synchrotrons: Rapid cycling synchrotron 2 interlaced rings 600 MeV (TART) 4 superimposed rings 800 MeV • Intensity gain: 4 (rings) x 1.5 (longer bunches) • Ring diameter: 50 m = ¼ PS • Vertical spacing: RF cavity, etc. G. Brianti

  5. Project Report MPS / Int. DL / B 67 -19 THE SECOND STAGE CPS IMPROVEMENT STUDY 800 MeV BOOSTER SYNCHROTRON G. Brianti

  6. Prominent contributors • Werner Hardt studied various schemes • Helmut Reich, Coordinator of the study, promoted the project • Claude Bovet elaborated many important aspects of the final version • Many other contributors G. Brianti

  7. Design criteria • Flexibility of operation • Reliability (radiation hardness) • Good safety margins on currents, voltages, etc. • Sources of beam instabilities as small as possible and enlargement of their theory G. Brianti

  8. PS Depart. MPS, MSC, SI 1968 Pierre Germain Helmut Reich Giorgio Brianti G. Brianti

  9. Construction 1968 - 1972 • Synchrotron Injector Division (SI) in PS Department (MPS, SC, SI) • Cost (MCHF in1965 prices): Booster 31 Linac mod. 3 CPS mod. (new RF) 15 Personnel 14 Total 63 G. Brianti

  10. PSB tunnel construction Centre on CH-FR border No buildings on border: only small hill on site G. Brianti

  11. Xmas party 1970 G.B., H.B., H.R., G.N. G. Brianti

  12. Energy and magnetic field • 0.6 T for 800 MeV: overdesign? • Too short magnets ? : end effects • Optimization of capital and energy consumption over 10 years! • Large horizontal size for good field region and per-ring correction loops • Vertical separation given by other equipment (mainly RF cavity) • Energy raised to 1 GeV ISOLDE & 1.4 GeV LHC upgrade 2 Gev G. Brianti

  13. Booster Ring - separate function32 Dipoles, 48 Quadrupoles G. Brianti

  15. PSB Quadrupoles G. Brianti

  16. Quadrupoles – End connections G. Brianti

  17. Some novel features • Magnets powered directly from grid • 4 vertically stacked dipoles/quadrupoles with common yoke & excellent field quality • Vacuum chamber made of Inconel X with square « corrugations » of variable amplitude • Quick clamp vacuum chamber connections with metallic seals • Multiturn injection • Bunch recombination by RF gymnastics • Computer controls G. Brianti

  21. Dipole vacuum chamber Inconel X, corrugations of variable amplitude G. Brianti

  22. Evolution of intensity over time G. Brianti

  23. ISOLDE at Booster G. Brianti

  24. Radiotherapy at Booster ? • Around 1970 proposal of using the Booster for hadrontherapy (proton beam) • Hôpital de Genève finally not interested G. Brianti

  25. Booster 1997 The first 25 years now 40 years …and many more G. Brianti
