  4. Hitler Youth • What was the Hitler Youth? The Hitler Youth was a logical extension of Hitler's belief that the future of Nazi Germany was its children. The Hitler Youth was seen as being as important to a child as school was. In the early years of the Nazi government, Hitler had made it clear as to what he expected German children to be like • What people were involved in the Hitler youth? The Hitler Youth involved two major groups: the Hitler-Jugend, the Hitler Youth, for boys and the Bund DeutscherMädel, the League of German Girls, for girls. • Was any one excluded from the Hitler Youth? 1.Those who commit dishonorable acts,2. Were dismissed from the Hitler Youth before this law came into effect because of dishonorable acts,3. Who cause offense by their moral behavior in the Hitler Youth or in public, and therefore discredit the Hitler Youth 4. People of Jewish decent • How do you think someone’s involvement in the Hitler Youth might impact their thinking?

  5. What is Propaganda • Propaganda, the coordinated attempt to influence public opinion through the use of media, was skillfully used by the NSDAP in the years leading up to and during Adolf Hitler's leadership of Germany (1933–1945). • National Socialist propaganda provided a crucial instrument for acquiring and maintaining power, and for the implementation of their policies, including the pursuit of total war and the extermination of millions of people in the Holocaust.

  6. Types of propaganda • Newspapers: The VölkischerBeobachter ("People's Observer") was the official daily newspaper of the NSDAP since December 1920 • Speakers • Posters: art was a mainstay of the Nazi propaganda effort, aimed both at Germany itself and occupied territories • Films: The Nazis produced many films to promote their views. • Books: The Nazis and sympathizers published many books • Text books

  7. This is another common World War II poster. The caption: “Adolf Hitler is victory!” It was withdrawn from circulation after the defeat at Stalingrad.

  8. From the 1930’s. This poster makes the most direct Christological comparison I’ve seen. Just as a dove descended on Christ when he was baptised by John the Baptist, so what looks to be an eagle hovers against the light of heaven over an idealized Hitler. The text: “Long live Germany!.”

  9. This one is intended for Flemish speaking Belgians, urging them to join the SS Langemarck Division. The caption in red says: “Our anwer: Pick up your arms and fight!” The soldiers are attacking England, personsified by a Jew with the Union Jack.

  10. The caption: “One eats the other and the Jew devours them all...” The cartoon promotes the Nazi claim that the Jews were behind World War II, having orchestrated it to destroy Nazi Germany.

  11. This is an SS recruiting poster distributed in Belgium.

  12. This fall 1944 poster is by Mjölnir. The Volksturm was the Nazi attempt to call on the last reserves. Those too young or too old for regular military service were called into service. The caption translates as “For freedom and life.” Courtesy of Dr. Robert D. Brooks
