Background • October 2016 meeting: the DSS agreed to work with Eurostat on the modernisation of HBS and TUS, based on the Wiesbaden Memorandum request for improving their coverage and comparability • March 2017 meeting: Eurostat informed on the launch of two TFs for developing Innovative tools and sources for HBS and TUS respectively (ToRs presented) Eurostat

  3. First TFs’ joint meeting • April 2017: Joint meeting of both TFs • Adoption of the mandates for both Task Forces • Information provided by Member States about their ongoing activities (e.g., automatic coding from scanned receipts for HBS, use of mobile devices for collecting some data, analyses on possibilities for collecting financial data and for using online budget diaries) • First outcomes: Yammer network for exchange + Wiki for supporting activities + Inventory of existing tools in MS to be done (HBS+TUS) Eurostat

  4. Ongoing work • Eurostat (F4) appointed a Project Manager • Ongoing 2016-2017 grants for TUS (project examples: web-diaries, fitness trackers, PC monitoring software) • Task Force meetings 2017-2018 planned: • Next meetings: TF TUS on 10-11 October and TF HBS on 12-13 December 2017 • Meetings in April and July 2018 and a Joint meeting in October 2018 for evaluating first work done (with a view to the 2020 wave of both surveys) and decide on further work Eurostat

  5. Ongoing work • Contract (November 2017 until end 2018): • Assess future data needs for both surveys • Inventory of existing tools for data collection as well as potential data sources and further tools available or in development in MS, using standardised descriptions • First description/prototype of an innovative tool for data collection: • « harmonised » version of existing national tools • « environment independent »: can be used in all MS Eurostat

  6. Future work (2018-2019 and further) • On the basis of the prototype, further development of the first version of a tool for MS / further national development (contract vs. grants) for the 2020 round of HBS and TUS • Further investigate usage of possible new data sources • Set up a programme of activities and developments in view of a full implementation of innovative tools and sources for the 2025-2030 round (with synergies between developments for both surveys) Eurostat

  7. DSS is invited to take note of: • The latest developments on the project for modernising household budget and time use statistics • The work envisaged and the initial planning set up Eurostat
