Practical information • In English • 20 or 30 credit points • For appr. 20 incoming Erasmus-students and 10 Flemish students • Close contact with teachers • February-March-April, optional practice in May • Host city moves every two years: • 2005-2007: Brussels (EHSAL) • 2007-2009: Antwerp (KdG) • 2009-2011: Bruges (KHBO) • 2011-2013: Vorselaar (KHK)

Practical information • Lodging depends • All together in one ‘peda’ in Brussels and Bruges • Private rooms all over town in Antwerp • About 10 different nationalities • E, TR, CZ, A, NL, RO, BG, P, PL, BE… • Visit Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges, Ypres • Budget-friendly • 4 modules, 2-3 weeks and 5 credit points each

Modules • Module 1 • By KdG • Part 1: Expression, emotion, communication • Confrontation with nature, oneself and others (different cultures coming together) • Practical tasks and modern art (f.e. outdoor activities, cooking, video-making and –editing, creative workshops) • In a Château-ferme in the Ardennes forests

Modules • Module 1 • By KdG • Part 2: Youth and subcultures • “What you are, is what you seem to be” • Recognizing youth cultures and their meanings • In groups of max. 4, with shared interests • Paper about a specific youth subculture: looks, history, politics, music, ethnicity • 20 min. multimedia presentations of the papers with video, music, powerpoints etc.

Modules • Module 2: Education and Diversity • By KHK • 1 week of colleges on diversity, identity, culture, multiculturality, migrations • 2 weeks of visits to • multicultural organisations (Foyer, Studio Globo) • ‘black’ schools and classes for ‘newcomers’ • former concentration camp • sociocultural organisations around schools • government agencies on equal opportunities in education (European and Flemish)

Modules • Module 3: Culture, society and education • By KHBO • Creating cultural/historical identities • by interviewing people, taking pictures, map reading, watching films, listening to music • Part 1: HISTORY • Wars and cultural identity • Federalisation and European dimensions • Colonialism and its consequences • Part 2: ARTS / ART HISTORY • ‘Nationality’ and instrumentalism of art • What makes a painting Flemish? Was Brel a Flemish artist? Where does folklore come from?

Modules • Module 3: Culture and education • By KHBO • Visits to • Brussels (fine arts, colonialism in Matongé quarter, Bellevue Museum on Belgium, opera, Europe) • Bruges (history as an economy, school trips) • Ghent (modern art, industrial heritage) • Antwerp (fashion Museum, minority communities) • Ypers Salient and Dixmude (WWI cemeteries, Flemish movement)

Modules • Module 4: Teaching in Europe • By HUB-EHSAL • Educational systems in the EU: similar but different, each with advantages and disadvantages • Through: • Lectures (Bologna, European funds) • Observations (European/International schools, Second Chance Education for Adults) • Presentations (Own national education system, own cultural teaching styles) • Workshops (Intercultural education, pros and cons of educational contexts)

  11. Modules • Closing week • Reports: personal reports of each module, group evaluation of each module, personal evaluation of what they have learned • Presentation of those reports • Formal ending: group photo, diploma call, handing out signed document folders • Informal ending: Eurosongfestival, quiz show, eating and drinking, ‘reversed’ guided tour

Modules • Optional practice • 10 credit points • Only at specific and timely request of the student • Observation and/or participation • With tasks and supervision • Not necessarily in • Dutch (rather in English, French, Turkish…) • Schools (rather in Adult Education, School Support, Intercultural Education projects) • One single organisation (rather very diverse)
