What is Non-Fiction? We learned FictionBookscontain stories that are NOT true.Non-FictionBookscontain information that IS true
Non-FictionBooks -provide factual information -have text features that help us understand the text:~ Table of Contents, Index, Glossary ~ Headings, Subheadings ~ Pictures, Graphs, Charts
Non-FictionBooks - are not necessarily meant to be read from cover to cover - are organized by subject or topic
Non-FictionBookscontain information that IS true(with a few exceptions) OOPS!!We need to back up!
What exceptions? When the Dewey Decimal System was designed, all books were shelved by subject and each subject was given a number. Even Fiction books had a number….813! Because the fiction collection is so large, most libraries have a Fiction section.
Other Fiction books with Dewey Decimal #’s are: 394 & 398 Folktales, Fairy Tales and Riddles 811 Poetry 812 Plays

How are non-fiction books organized? Melvil Dewey took care of that problem. He was a librarian who devised the Dewey Decimal System. He assigned a number to every subject or topic.
Mr. Dewey divided the major subjects or topics by hundreds. Let’s take a look at each division. 000-100-200-300-400-500-600-700-800-900
