Pilot Year 1 • Training sessions provided by Bromley 14 – 19 collaborative included local schools • Bromley College piloted: • ICT L1 In Motor Vehicle L1 • English L2 in Animal Care L2 • Mathematics L1 in Return to Learn • Functional Skills (FS) delivered as an enhancement to Key Skills and Skills for Life (SfL) • Subject specialist and vocational tutor worked together to embed delivery

Findings from year one • Embedded delivery model worked well • Attendance on paper based exams • Insufficient capacity particularly with Mathematics • Existing SfL assignments can be adapted for use in skill building for FS • Lack of understanding of familiarity and how to offer candidates opportunities for working with unfamiliar topics and settings

  5. Pilot Year 2 • Foundation Diploma in Engineering (16 Learners) • In house training completed with engineering vocational staff • FSSP training arranged for specific subjects with both vocational and SfL staff • Subject focus groups comprised of vocational tutors and subject specialists • Expansion of number of subjects/levels with adult learners alongside existing SfL

  6. Planning for the Future • Working in collaboration with FSSP regional co-ordinator to complete development plan • Management briefings planned • Planning for additional diplomas to be in place by May 09 • Whole staff familiarisation by year end • Maintaining contacts with 14 – 19 collaborative

Functional Skills and Skills for Life & Key Skills • Candidates can register for Skills for Life and Key Skills qualifications until at least 2010 • Achievement of key skills up to 2012 • National support continues for SfL • Functional Skills will replace Key Skills • Functional Skills may replace SfL

Advice for centres in transition • Deliver skills (SfL / Key Skills) now so that you: • become familiar with skills standards and levels • ensure your learners benefit from explicit skills provision and qualifications • continue to highlight application and transfer of skills • develop capacity for delivery • build confidence and expertise

  11. Advice for centres in transition • Keep up to date about: • development of the qualifications • progress of the pilot • developments in assessment methodologies • the standards themselves and the QCA amplification and exemplification • sources of support
